MEMS Speaker Startup SonicEdge Establishes Business Unit at Sound Hub Denmark

August 9 2022, 01:10
SonicEdge, an Israeli startup working in MEMS speakers has registered a Danish business unit at Sound Hub Denmark in Struer. SonicEdge has developed an ultra-compact MEMS speaker solution based on a patented design and modulated ultrasound technology that promises to be significantly smaller, more energy-efficient and more robust without compromising on sound quality. Having found investors and clients in Denmark, SonicEdge is now looking to develop its business further and hire for its Danish R&D department.

The market for silicon speakers, including MEMS (Micro Electromechanical Systems) speakers shows excellent potential for emerging applications such as hearing aids, true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds and the so-called hearables. So far, only very few providers of this innovative and disruptive technology have managed to reach the market. SonicEdge is committed to develop a competitive solution that is able to generate high quality sound from what they believe to be the world’s smallest speaker.

SonicEdge developed a unique technology that generates ultrasound from multiple microtransducers, and then transforms the ultrasound to sound using a patented acousto-mechanical frequency transformer or acoustic modulator, contained on a solid state MEMS device. While a standard microspeaker has a constant sound level for lower frequencies and drops at higher frequencies, sound from a ultrasound speaker creates a volume velocity source, regardless of frequency. In microspeaker applications this enables increasing SPL for lower frequencies and extended SPL at high frequencies, up to 20kHz. The company's SE1000 solution includes the MEMS speaker chip that generates sound combined with an ASIC that drives the transducer.

Establishing a Danish business unit serves many different purposes for SonicEdge, including access to audio specialists and benefitting from the support of the unique ecosystem that Sound Hub provides for business development and promote its technology.

"We already have Danish investors and key competencies associated. Opening a business unit at Sound Hub Denmark is a natural next step to expand and get closer to our customers and partners in Denmark," explains Joel Beilin, Director of SonicEdge who has been working with Oticon and Siemens. "To establish a business unit in this unique development cluster and get access to the resources, competencies and matchmaking possibilities which Sound Hub Denmark provides is unique and perfect for us."

The establishment of a business unit in Denmark and within the European Union, together with the ability to be part of a dedicated business development environment focusing on audio technologies, was a major consideration for the move. "There are so many good reasons for doing business in Denmark. We find wonderful people with an amazingly open culture for collaboration and knowledge sharing. A labour market with a highly developed technological infrastructure makes it attractive to do business here. We can find investors who genuinely understand our business, audio companies, which potentially can become future customers, and universities with audio technology as their primary focus. This means we can access the newest know-how and potentially highly qualified employees," adds Ari Mizrachi, one of the company's founders, together with Moti Margalit.

"Since our first dialogue with SonicEdge more than two years ago, we can see a remarkable increase in market interest for small and more energy efficient technologies. This trend makes SonicEdge a perfect match for the Sound Hub community," explains the CEO of Sound Hub Denmark, Peter Petersen. "We see a mutual benefit of having SonicEdge represented at our premises."

SonicEdge has several patents protecting its technology, and are looking to promote their differentiation also on footprint, robustness, and power consumption. The company has activities in Israel and is currently looking for employees to build up the Danish R&D department.
