Mackie Debuts Firmware Update With NDI and Multi Language Support for DLZ Creator All-in-One Podcast Mixer

August 25 2023, 00:35
Timed with IFA 2023, Mackie announced multi-language support for its DLZ Creator, the company's recently launched all-in-one podcasting and streaming audio solution for content creators of any experience level. The new 1.1 firmware update introduces support for the increasingly popular NDI networking protocol over Ethernet, and includes a localized user interface in English (default), Chinese (simplified Mandarin), Japanese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
Adding an important functionality, the new firmware update will feature integration with NewTek’s pioneering Network Device Interface (NDI) technology, a fast and powerful bi-directional standard enabling audio and video workflows across Ethernet networks. With a growing user base of streamers, gamers, and content creators, the integration of NDI in Mackie’s DLZ Creator enables fast and easy real-time movement of audio and video between computers, cameras, and other digital devices, and will empower users with powerful, professional level connectivity.

NDI technology combines a protocol and codec to allow software and devices to transport high-quality, low-latency video over gigabit Ethernet networks. The technology was announced in 2015, when it was used as a secret weapon to expand the functionality of the popular NewTek TriCaster video production system (the successor to the popular Video Toaster) to work over networks and even over the Internet, even before any other IP technologies had been established. It suddenly became a very popular way to connect PTZ cameras over Ethernet, increasingly used in remote production studios.

When live streaming applications exploded, NDI was adopted by many manufacturers to connect systems and allow remote control with audio and video contribution without depending on any other proprietary platforms. Quick updates in 2016 and 2017 (NDI 3.0) added multicast and other valuable features, leading Microsoft to add NDI support to Skype, which was increasingly used in television for remote interviews and even contribution - and still is. Support from major manufacturers, including Avid, Cisco, and many others that followed rapidly, and in 2019, NewTek added Multi-TCP mode to NDI 4.0, which helped support NDI applications just before the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2021 Newtek introduced NDI 5 with improved UDP transmission, redundant discovery server support, and many other support tools, turning the technology into one of the most important "de facto" standards in media networking.
