Just One More Thing. Don't Miss Voice Coil December 2023

November 29 2023, 10:10
This is the last issue of Voice Coil for 2023, which includes a combination of valuable industry resources and expert knowledge for loudspeaker engineers.

In Industry News & Developments, Vance Dickason discusses the latest Klippel dB-Lab & QC7 software updates (v212.616), the return of Redrock Acoustics to providing loudspeaker measurement services and the announcement of its new website, and new audio measurement bundles from Audio Precision and GRAS Sound and Vibration. Also highlighted in this issue is the publication of an updated document from the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Standards Committee, detailing the recently approved standard, AES75-2023: “AES standard for acoustics – Measuring loudspeaker maximum linear sound levels using noise."

For this issue, Mike Klasco and Nora Wong (Menlo Scientific) have compiled an updated directory of Engineering Simulation Software and Test & Measurement Hardware Vendors. Effectively two combined sub-directories, the directory includes updated descriptions and presentations from each vendor, including those companies that offer digital twins, auralization, and other advanced extensions of simulations. The directory covers all software publishers that offer simulation programs applicable for speaker driver design, speaker system design, diaphragm and cone simulation, magnetic structures, acoustic ports, and chambers within transducers.

And in the final Test Bench for 2023, Vance Dickason characterizes the latest PTT8.0X04-NAB-02 8" aluminum cone woofer from Purifi Audio. This driver is the fifth Purifi woofer to be examined in Test Bench (see Voice Coil July 2021 for the 6.5" PTT6.5X04-NFA-01 woofer; the November 2021 issue for the 4" PTT4.0X04-NFA-01 woofer; the October 2022 issue for the 5.25" PTT5-25X04-NFA-01 woofer; and the January 2023 issue for the PTT6-5M08-NFA-01 midrange - all available online).

The new aluminum cone PTT8.0X04-NAB-02 4Ω woofer includes the same constant Sd surround, cone edge stiffening ring, and low magnetic hysteresis motor design. The feature set for the PTT8.0X04 begins with a proprietary eight-spoke cast-aluminum frame, slightly curvilinear profile black anodized aluminum cone, 3.5" convex black anodized aluminum dust cap, plus the addition of a V-shaped edge fiber reinforcing ring glued around the outside rim of the back side of the cone. Compliance is provided by the Purifi NBR surround, which is like no other surround in the history of woofer development. The PTT8.0X04e is rated for 350W IEC268 long-term power handling, and a 9.3mm Xmax.

And in this issue of Voice Coil, Vance Dickason shares a compilation of things that loudspeaker industry engineers and experts have been saying about the 8th edition of the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook, now available with extended content in a special hardcover edition, and for the first-time all-in color. Also, a reminder that on request from Vance Dickason, the old Loudspeaker Recipes book was relaunched as Loudspeaker Design Cookbook Volume II, priced at $39.95 and now available here.
