John Calder started in the music and sound business as a teenager playing drums in a surf band, and later became a successful recording engineer, working in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Milan and Montreal. His interest in acoustics lead him to work in studio design. After 10 years with Acoustical Surfaces (ASI), were he created and led the Acoustic Geometry brand, he now started as an independent room acoustics designer as Calder Acoustics, based in Minneapolis, MN.

In 10 years with Acoustical Surfaces (ASI), John Calder created and directed the Acoustic Geometry brand, designed two key products - the Curve Diffusor and the CornerSorber - and wrote a well-received acoustics book, "Modern Room Acoustics. He also wrote a peer-reviewed Acoustical Society of America research paper (New Research on Low-Frequency Membrane Absorbers), and an article about frequency response and frequency timing for audioXpress, in August 2019. Notably, he also created highly-acclaimed acoustics videos with over 5 million views on YouTube and over 2 million TikTok views.

For his new company, Calder Acoustics, John says “My job is to make your room sound much better. I’ve done that for recording studios, high-end listening rooms, home theater and screening rooms, retail showrooms, and even a huge stone oval-shaped event center. I love people’s joyful reactions to their room’s 'absolutely much better' sound."

As an independent room acoustics designer, John welcomes acoustical challenges. "I’ve learned what constitutes “sounding better” for critical-listening rooms through many years of experience – simply creating a different sounding space isn’t the same as making that space sound better. My goal is to create great room acoustics specific to your room," he adds.

John Calder has more than four decades of professional sound experience, careers include musician, recording engineer, studio owner, sound designer (theater, film and video), post-production audio mixer (Frontline - Peabody Award), product developer, college instructor, marketing director, video content creator, and acoustics designer. His creative credits include Neil Diamond (RIAA Platinum Record), The Band, Joe Cocker, Umberto Balsamo (Italian Gold Record), Cornell University, MN Zoo (AZA Top Honors Award), MN History Center (Muse Award), and the MN Science Museum.
