Acoustic research and software development firm REDIacoustics has announced a new range of room optimization services based on the platform's AI-powered NIRO [Non-Cuboid Iterative Room Optimizer] tool. REDI ROCS [Room Optimization of Cuboid Spaces] is a streamlined, affordable process that offers insight into the acoustic conditions of rooms and generates an easy-to-understand first-approach acoustic treatment report. This report is designed to educate, inform, and offer clear recommendations on how to optimize the space.
REDIacoustics is an acoustic research and software development firm founded by Dr. Peter D’Antonio, John Storyk, and PK Pandey, that designs software tools that aid in the acoustical optimization of critical listening environments. Beginning with their NIRO (Non-Cuboid Iterative Room Optimizer) service, a software as a service (SaaS) solution developed since 2018.
For many years, acousticians have been looking for a computer-modeling tool capable of facilitating predictive, iterative analysis required to optimize small room design (i.e. studios, home theaters, audiophile rooms, etc.). The effort was promoted by Peter D'Antonio, the creator of RPG Diffusor Systems, and the inventor of numerous trademarked and patented, optimized diffusing and absorbing surfaces, together with John Storyk, founding partner of WSDG (Walters-Storyk Design Group) architectural/acoustic design firm.
The REDIAcoustics team also includes PK Pandey, the founder of AVN/SYS audio/video systems design firm, Rinaldi Petrolli, a skilled acoustic engineer who serves as NIRO’s primary Python programmer, Artur Zorzo, an accomplished acoustic engineer/programmer with real-time audio signal processing and acoustic measurements experience, and, acoustical engineer, Thiago Sanchez.
NIRO’s software platform consists of three modules, which automatically and iteratively optimize any size or shape critical listening room, both below and above the transition frequency from wave to geometrical acoustics. The Geometry Module optimizes the rooms’ dimensions and the positions of all loudspeakers and listeners, by searching for the flattest modal response. The Damper Module designs and optimally locates all low frequency corrective treatments now referred to as Acoustical Parametric Equalizers (APEQs.) The Specular Reflection Module optimizes the room’s Reflection Free Zone; identifies disturbing mid and high frequency response anomalies; and addresses specific degrees of acoustic envelopment.
One or all of the modules may be engaged to address specific acoustic requirements for the high performance listening environment. The process guides the design of acoustically neutral environments – by providing a blank acoustical canvas that enables the end user to tailor the response to suit personal taste, by utilizing audio processing.
NIRO addresses low-frequency response and its temporal decay; SBIR (Speaker-Boundary Interference Response) due to the proximity of the speakers to a hard boundary e.g., walls, ceiling or floor; the spatial and temporal Reflection Free Zone (RFZ) surrounding the mix position; and the Diffuse Field Zone (DFZ). To correct these physical problems, the room shape, listener, and loudspeaker positions are simultaneously optimized, by specific acoustic treatments applications.
This allows iterative optimization of any shaped room, while simultaneously considering source and listening positions, and its accuracy has been verified by real world acoustical measurements of several test case rooms.
Affordable, First Approach
So far, REDIacoustic’s NIRO has already been used to optimize acoustic conditions of critical listening rooms in over 200 studios. "The REDIacoustics approach benefits from over forty years of acoustic experience within some of the world’s most celebrated recording and listening spaces,” says Peter D’Antonio. "Having affordable options has always been a goal for REDIacoustics as a company, and our new services allow us to share these experiences with people looking for simple, more cost-effective solutions that can be implemented in their spaces today."
In addition to offering these new services, REDiacoustics has created an Acoustic Treatment Calculator that can be used for free on the firm's website to get a preview of the possibilities that room optimization can offer within a given space. "With the boom in home recording and content creation, more people than ever before are using rooms in their homes and offices as critical listening spaces," adds PK Pandey. "Ultimately we’re looking to demystify acoustics and educate the public on how easy it can be to be on the path to a better sounding room with the implementation of a few simple techniques," he adds. "Excellent sounding rooms are not just for multi-million dollar recording studios anymore – we want people to know that you can implement these solutions anywhere."
