Inovonics Changes Ownership as Jim Wood Retires

August 4 2022, 00:30
Broadcast equipment manufacturer Inovonics, Inc. was initially financed and has been wholly owned by Jim Wood and his immediate family following the founding of the company in 1972. Jim managed Inovonics until 2006, the year he turned day-to-day operations over to COO Ben Barber. Ben was elevated to President/CEO in 2012. Now, after 50 years leading Inovonics, Jim Wood steps down and passes the torch to CEO Ben Barber.

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2022, Inovonics has maintained its position as a leading supplier of cost effective and innovative radio broadcast products. Inovonics specializes in high quality audio processors, RDS encoders, AM/FM modulation monitors, and off-air monitoring equipment for AM/FM/HD/RDS/Internet Radio.

At age 80, and with 50 years of Inovonics employment under his belt and multiple patents granted in audio signal processing, Jim Wood has made the decision to formally retire from the firm. Under undisclosed terms of an agreement recently concluded, Ben Barber became the new owner of Inovonics, Inc. on August 1.

According to Wood, “Ben has evolved into a much better manager and planner than I ever was, and under Ben’s guidance the company has dramatically increased its presence, market share and prestige within our industry.” Jim goes on to say that the change in ownership is “nominal” for the most part, that Ben’s decisions over the past 16 years represent the direction the company will continue to follow.

Jim plans to maintain ties to Inovonics in an informal advisory capacity, but will keep busy in his retirement with projects he’s had to put off over the years due to his concentration on business. Among those, Jim writes interesting DIY articles for publications such as audioXpress (where he also appeared as James B. Wood). The latest one, published in audioXpress February 2019 was one of the most original projects in the publication's history - an Experimental Cutterhead for Phonograph Disc Recording, which is based on readily available pressure transducers - essentially loudspeakers without cones. With limited skills and materials at-hand, Jim Wood was able to create an electromechanical disc recording stereo head and shared lots of interesting insight on how direct-to-cut phono recording works.

Inovonics is located in Felton, California amidst the coastal redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains (near Silicon Valley). All Inovonics’ products are designed, manufactured, and assembled locally to ensure quality from start to finish. All products include a 3-year Factory Warranty and Premiere after sales service.
