ESS Technology Launches New High Performance 32-bit Audio Multichannel Digital-to-Analog Converters

August 17 2022, 00:35
Audio semiconductor devices specialist ESS Technology has launched 4 new Sabre PROfessional Series Digital-to-Analog converters, setting the company's benchmark for consumer and professional audio applications. The new converters are the flagship ES9039MPRO and ES9039PRO, together with the cost-effective ES9027MPRO and ES9027PRO 8 channel DACs. The M models feature a stereo MQA renderer. And targeting cost sensitive applications that need improved performance, ESS also launched the new ESS ES9017 8-channel DAC.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, the privately held fabless semiconductor ESS Technology is capitalizing on the strong market demand for audio digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converter devices and is reinforcing its portfolio. Following an earlier announcement in May 2022, ESS is now launching 4 new Sabre PROfessional Series Digital-to-Analog converters and one new 8-channel model for cost effective  audio performance.

The new ESS ES9039MPRO and ES9039PRO devices provide 8 channels of flagship ultra-low noise digital conversion with a dynamic range (DNR) of +132dB, -122dB THD+N per channel and +140B DNR in mono mode. The also new ES9027MPRO and ES9027PRO provide 8 channels of digital conversion with a dynamic range (DNR) of +124dB per channel and -112dB of THD+N.

This new Sabre PRO series DACs are based on the fourth generation of ESS patented Hyperstream modulators. This latest generation of the Hyperstream IV improves audio performance while consuming significantly lower power compared to the previous generation. This audio performance improvement translates into less digital noise inside the device allowing for the vibrant nuances of the audio to be more “real”.

These 32-bit converters support very high sampling rates up to 768kHz PCM and DSD1024. The ES9039MPRO & ES9027MPRO models have both a stereo hardware MQA renderer built-in which helps recreate every minute detail of the original master recording encoded in that format. ESS is the only company to have a MQA hardware renderer in silicon.

The Sabre ES9039PRO & ES9027PRO series can accommodate a multitude of input interfaces including TDM, I2S, LJ, RJ, DSD, DoP, and S/PDIF. They can also be programmed using multiple input methods including I2C, SPI, and for ease of programmability a new hardware (HW) mode.

Superior performance is achieved with the use of pre-programed filters that are ideal to preserve time-domain performance, improve imaging and provide the most accurate signal preservation possible. The ES9039PRO/ES9039MPRO have programmable FIR filters for the most discerning audio applications.

"ESS technology has been leading the industry with the highest performance DAC for many years. Our newest ES9039PRO and ES9027PRO family further extend our leadership in this market and will allow our customers to further improve the performance of their systems,” says Robert Wong VP of ESS Worldwide Sales and Marketing. "In addition, consumers can further benefit from better quality audio."

These new Sabre DACs are ideal for the most demanding product designs, including audio mixing consoles and pro audio equipment, high end audio products, audio processors and audio test equipment. The ES9039MPRO & ES9039PRO DACs are available in a 64 pin QFP package, while the ES9027MPRO & ES9027PRO DACs are available in a 48 pin QFP and QFN packages. In addition, full evaluation boards, reference designs, and samples are available.

New ES9017 Sabre DAC
Targeting cost effective 8-channel audio applications, ESS Technology launched a new 32-bit Sabre DAC that helps designers and manufacturers deliver improved performance. The new ESS ES9017 Sabre DAC provides 8 channels of very low noise digital conversion with a dynamic range (DNR) of +120dB and -108dB THD+N per channel.

The new Sabre DAC is also based on the fourth generation of ESS patented Hyperstream, as featured in the new ESS Sabre PRO lineup including the ES9039PRO & ES9027PRO. This latest generation of the Hyperstream IV technology improves audio performance while consuming significantly lower power compared to the previous generation.

The 32-bit converter supports sampling rates up to 768kHz PCM and DSD512. The Sabre ES9017 can accommodate a multitude of input interfaces including TDM, I2S, LJ, RJ, DSD and DoP. The device can also be programmed using multiple input methods including I2C, SPI, and for ease of programmability a new hardware (HW) mode.

The ES9017 was designed with affordability in mind while incorporating many features taken from the PRO DAC series, including the use of pre-programmed filters, making it an ideal solution for integrated receivers, streaming audio including NAPs (Network Audio Players), USB DACs, Soundbars, as well as pro audio interfaces, mixers and DAW equipment.

"The new ES9017 expands on our portfolio of 8 channel Sabre DACs allowing customers to choose the performance they need from ESS professional to high performance products,” adds Robert Wong. "In addition, we believe its ease of design and performance gives our customers an unparalleled advantage in their cost sensitive systems."

The ES9017 DAC is available in a 48 pin QFP and QFN packages for reduced PCB board space. Full evaluation boards, reference designs, and samples are available.
