July 22 2021, 01:10
ELAC announced availability in North America of the brand's new Solano line of premium home speakers. These new models are a perfect solution for both 2-channel music enthusiasts or home theater configurations. With three affordable models, the ELAC Solano series includes the attractive BS 283 bookshelf, the attention-grabbing FS 287 floorstander, and the CC 281 center-speaker, all simple rectangular-shaped speakers, made with solid MDF, and paired with a slightly curved, large front baffle, that delivers an attractive look and feel.

All three speakers are compact, attractive bass reflex designs that offer great performance, reinterpreting the typical ELAC attributes as a cohesive system. All models are available in high gloss black and white finishes that work very well together. As ELAC summarizes, “Our new Solano series brings the performance benefits of our iconic JET5 tweeter and the meticulous craftsmanship of German manufacturing to an all-new affordable price point.”

All models in the Solano line-up include the notorious JET 5 tweeter, delivering an extra layer of definition to the sound, with its fast response and wide dynamic range, offering minimal distortion, lots of headroom and a distinctly wider frequency range than conventional dome tweeters. The ELAC JET folded-ribbon tweeter is one of the most praised high-frequency drivers in the hi-fi industry and has won international praise with its transparent and effortless sound image.

The frequency response is otherwise reinforced by powerful 6" aluminum sandwich woofers, custom manufactured for ELAC using joined paper cones utilizing a proprietary gluing process which results in a stiff, precise, linear, and lightweight driver. This unique woofer with large surround delivers mid and bass frequencies that are clean, clear, and powerful, being configured with crossovers at 450 and 2,400Hz, in the 2.5-way models and 2,400Hz in the BS 283 bookshelf model. The bass reflex port on the Solano series is directed to the floor, exiting the bottom of the speaker cabinet in a down-firing configuration, for a more flexible speaker placement and to minimize ventilation noise.

Cast chassis have been used for all drivers in the Solano series minimizing reflections back to the cone. All three Solano series speakers are outfitted with two sets of heavy-duty binding posts allowing to bi-amp or bi-wire each loudspeaker. These binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors.

As mentioned, the Solano speakers come in either high-gloss black or white paint with the bookshelf and floorstanding models featuring lacquered cast aluminum bases. All six models are available at the end of July 2021 at ELAC retailers with MAP prices for the BS283-GB at $1999.98 (Pair), $1199.98 each for the CC281-GW center-channel Solano dual 6”, and $1999.98 each for the FS287-GW Solano dual 6” floorstanding speakers.

Throughout the 95 years of the company's history, ELAC continues to build on its heritage, with a commitment to the best sound. Founded September 1, 1926, in Kiel, Germany, originally as Electroacustic GmbH, a company focused on the development of sonar technology and the research of signal and sound channels in air and water, ELAC transitioned to consumer audio products after World War II. During the 1970s and 1980s, ELAC manufactured high-quality turntables and in 1984, began designing loudspeakers in conjunction with AXIOM Electroacoustic Speaker Specialists. One year later, ELAC’s newly developed 4Pi omnidirectional tweeter, a driver that combined extended range with broad dispersion, launched ELAC into the company of the elite speaker manufacturers of that time.

In 1993, ELAC introduced the JET folded-ribbon tweeter, with an expanded frequency response up to 35kHz. Since then, ELAC earned a reputation for advanced technology an uncompromising build quality, with a complete range of affordable home audio speakers and electronics.
