Developers and Manufacturers Return to Munich for electronica 2024

September 2 2024, 14:10
Every two years, the world of electronics meets at electronica in Munich, Germany. As the world's leading trade fair in the sector - with a massive exhibition area and attendance numbers - it presents the industry's entire range of technologies, products and solutions for electronics development and manufacturing. For electronica 2024, November 12-15, 2024, the entire diversity of the electronics industry will be in 18 exhibition halls, with a strong increase in international exhibitors.

Once again held at the Munich Exhibition Center, in Germany, electronica 2024 is a massive trade-show, complemented with practice-oriented forums and world-class conferences that provide in-depth insights into the latest research and application trends - from automation with AI to electromobility and smart energy. More than 2,800 expected exhibitors and around 70,000 visitors from all over the world make electronica the most important meeting place and source of inspiration for the international electronics industry.

As an established industry event, electronica has been bringing the international electronics industry together for 60 years – and in 2024 the show celebrates this important anniversary year. electronica embodies the entire spectrum of technologies, products and solutions from the entire electronics sector, and that includes all the technologies that are essential to the development of audio products, from embedded solutions to the latest SoCs and wireless devices. Although the show is the place to meet all the manufacturers of cases and heath sinks, it also reflects the rapid technological development in all fields of electronics allowing visitors to see both the latest in haptics, flexible electronics, and advanced edge AI solutions.

For electronica 2024, sustainability and artificial intelligence will be present in many of the innovations in the exhibition area, application-oriented lectures in the extensive conference and forum program, or in sociopolitical discussions such as the CEO Roundtable with its top-class panel.

"The high level of exhibitor interest in electronica continues. In 2024, we will occupy all 18 exhibition halls for the first time, together with SEMICON Europa, being held in two halls at the same time. That means we are heading for the biggest electronica ever and will once again cover the entire range of products, technologies and solutions in the electronics industry," says Exhibition Director Katja Stolle.

Compared to previous events, the share of international exhibitors has risen again in 2024 and will be around 60 percent. The showfloor has seen especially strong growth among companies from the US, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. With exhibitors from a total of more than 50 countries and all sectors of the electronics industry, electronica attracts companies ranging from key players to startups.

Among the exhibitors are also a number of companies that paused their trade fair participation in 2022 and have decided to return to electronica this year. The exhibition area will feature several new or expanded offerings: the EMS Pavilion, bringing together manufacturing service providers for electronic components, the Printed Electronics Pavilion, where suppliers of flexible and printed electronics will present themselves, and the Sensor Pavilion.

"Since electronica sees itself as THE innovation meeting point and driving force in the industry, we attach great importance to a comprehensive, future-oriented supporting program that leaves plenty of room for exchanging specialist knowledge and ideas,” as Caroline Pannier, Deputy Exhibition Director of electronica, explains.

At the CEO Roundtable on the evening before the first day of the trade fair, top decision-makers from the industry such as Jochen Hanebeck (Infineon), Jean-Marc Chery (STMicroelectronics) and Kurt Sievers (NXP Semiconductors) will discuss the latest trends and challenges. At the accompanying conferences, experts will talk about current developments in the areas of automotive and wireless systems and applications.

The former Embedded Platforms Conference has become the Embedded Platforms & Industrial Control Forum, with an even stronger focus on mechanical engineering and automation. Another important part of the supporting program are initiatives and offers for career planning and promoting new talent in order to counter the ever-present shortage of skilled workers.

electronica 2024 and Market Trends
Modern semiconductor technologies like SiC and GaN enable significant energy savings, and the global market for smart energy solutions is set to grow to 283 billion US dollars by 2027. Electronics is a key factor in the energy transition and development of smart energy solutions. That is why smart energy will be a key topic at electronica 2024, as it plays a decisive role in shaping a sustainable energy future with its facets ranging from smart grids and smart meters to power electronics.

Power electronics is a key technology for the energy transition. It enables the efficient conversion and control of electrical energy. Modern semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) offer significant advantages over conventional silicon. They boast higher switching capacities and lower losses, leading to higher efficiency levels and considerable energy savings. According to a study by Yole Développement, the market for SiC semiconductors will grow to 6.3 billion US dollars by 2027, which underscores the growing importance of this technology.

Sensors are the backbone of modern solutions. They record and process data that is essential for controlling and monitoring machines and systems. Real-time monitoring by sensors leads to optimized operations and higher productivity. At electronica 2024, leading companies such as AMSYS, Omron, STMicroelectronics or Würth will present the latest sensor technologies which enable precise measurements and increase efficiency and safety in industrial applications.

In the supporting program, the Embedded Platforms Forum on November 12 and 13, and the Industrial Control Forum on November 14 (Hall C5), in particular, will be an indispensable meeting place for all players in the industry, from developers and product managers to device and system manufacturers.

Electronic manufacturing services (EMS) are essential for modern electronics production and are the backbone of many industries. EMS offers comprehensive services ranging from the development to the production of complex electronic components for industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. With the new EMS Pavilion, the PCB, EMS & Components Marketplace, and a ZVEI panel discussion, electronica 2024 will serve that growing focus. The world’s leading trade fair for electronics will show how EMS service providers are shaping future electronics production through innovations and sustainability strategies.

electronica Automotive
From connected mobility to autonomous driving or sustainability – the automotive industry is facing major challenges on its path to digitalization and electrification. At electronica 2024, the most important companies in the electronics industry will network with the automotive industry. With the automotive industry at a turning point of electric mobility, and the emergence of disruptive technologies, software, battery and electronics industries play key roles here. electronica 2024 will focus primarily on the electronic components, technologies and solutions required for the mobility transition.

The digital driving experience has long since become the most important distinguishing feature, and the car has become a connected platform. Connected mobility runs through almost all vehicle functions. Highly digitalized vehicles form the basis for future technologies such as assisted and autonomous driving, but also for the driving experience through personalization and infotainment, as well as driver assistance systems (ADAS), especially safety functions.

electronica 2024 will serve as an ideal platform to bring the automotive and electronics industries together. The motto for 2024 is "Leading the way to the All Electric Society" and all the most important automotive solutions and technologies providers will be at the Munich show, including Alps Alpine, Analog Devices, Infineon, Murata, NXP, Samsung, STMicroelectronics, TDK and Vishay, among others. Numerous exhibitor innovations can be found in Hall B6 in the Smart Mobility Village and in the Smart Mobility Pavilion. The forum program on the Smart Mobility Stage in Hall B6 offers practical insights into current industry developments.

The electronica Automotive Conference will precede the show, on November 11, 2024. It brings together professionals and executives from the entire supply chain to discuss the most important trends and challenges facing the industry, with case studies from companies such as Audi, Bosch, Infineon, NXP and Qualcomm.
