Dear Reality Software Production Bundle for Spatialization and Binaural Rendering

March 30 2022, 00:35
Immersive audio specialist Dear Reality has been refocusing on production tools for spatial audio applications, including binaural rendering of those sources for regular headphones. To address growing requirements in that field, Dear Reality launched a plugin bundle to enhance any stereo production with a simplified mixing workflow and adding spatial audio. The bundle combines the dearVR MIX virtual mix room plugin with stereo music spatializer dearVR MUSIC.

Founded in 2014 by Achim Fell and Christian Sander, Dear Reality is a company working in the field of immersive audio controllers, best known for its binaural, Ambisonics, and multichannel encoders with realistic room virtualization. Since 2019, Dear Reality is part of the Sennheiser group and remains with Sennheiser (not part of the Sonova acquisition) since its products are intended for audio professionals, from sound engineers to sound designers and musicians.

In November 2021, Dear Reality released dearVR MIX, a monitoring plugin for headphone mixing, suited for all professional studio headphones. The solution features an exclusive Spatial Headphone Compensation feature, supporting the 44 most used professional studio headphones, and enabling reference listening in virtual stereo mix rooms with selectable loudspeaker positions and additional, non-studio listening environments for reference.

The new Stereo Production Bundle includes that dearVR MIX virtual monitoring plug-in and another solution called dearVR MUSIC, which adds spatialization to conventional stereo mixes - the magic fairy dust now required for music productions to be labeled as part of the "spatial audio" playlists, even if the musicians and producers themselves have no idea of what that is and what it is for. Basically, while dearVR MIX ensures headphone mixing in customizable virtual mix rooms, dearVR MUSIC adds a 360° panner and spatial reverb that gives depth and width to a mix - imagine a 3D Aphex Aural Exciter combined with a Roland RE-201 Space Echo...

"By combining our high-precision dearVR MIX virtual mix room with the advanced dearVR MUSIC spatializer, we are ensuring fully reliable stereo mixing through headphones while at the same time breaking down the barriers of stereo to add unique depth and width to a recording,” explains Achim Fell, co-CEO of Dear Reality.

The dearVR MUSIC plugin allows any studio working with any DAW to create "3D audio" content and "break down the limitations of crowded stereo mixes," as the company describes it. The "spatialization" relies on 18 true-to-life virtual acoustic environments for music production, such as a concert hall, church, stage, drum room, and many more. "With dearVR MUSIC’s advanced virtual acoustics, you can enrich every production with an immersive feel for the listener," says Christian Sander, co-CEO of Dear Reality. "The plug-in provides a big sound to all instruments that you want to sound huge."

With dearVR MIX, studio engineers and producers can translate their mixes to other sound systems and locations, even when they are on the road or in the studio. Based on advanced spatial audio technology, dearVR MIX turns any studio headphones into a reference stereo mix room with carefully designed acoustics - all binauralized to headphones. The plug-in also features Dear Reality’s Spatial Headphone Compensation, which adapts the 45 most used professional studio headphones to the selected virtual mixing room, enabling a model-independent, stable simulation of a perfect acoustic environment.

The Dear Reality Stereo Production Bundle is available for $189 USD or EUR 169 plus taxes.
