Biamp Introduces Flexible Voltera D Amplified Loudspeaker Controllers

February 13 2024, 00:35
Biamp had a strong presence at ISE 2024 in Barcelona, promoting its full range of networked media solutions with a large focus on commercial audio and corporate spaces. The Beaverton, Oregon-based company expanded its systems approach with the new Voltera D series of networked amplified loudspeaker controllers (ALCs), combining powerful onboard digital signal processors, sophisticated tools for tuning rooms, and a host of other one-of-a-kind features.

The new line of Voltera D amplified loudspeaker controllers is an important step in the evolution of Biamp's product strategy, allowing for a more integrated, networked approach, where the amplification takes a key role at unifying audio and signal management - hence the "loudspeaker controllers" reference. Matching the level of specifications of today's reference amplifier systems, the Voltera D series of networked amplifiers includes a powerful onboard DSP, sophisticated tools for tuning rooms, and a host of features that help drive reliability and audio performance, as well as enabling space and cost savings.

In terms of integration with Biamp's portfolio, the new Voltera D ALCs are configurable by either Tesira systems or the new Biamp VenueTune software, depending on user preference and audio network protocols, making setup and use easy. Amplification is available in 1200-watt or 2400-watt configurations across four or eight channels. The series is also one of the very few lines of amplifiers in the market to feature redundant network audio, support of failover between mains power and backup generators without a reboot, and group-controlled raised cosine EQ — making it attractive for large systems.

Voltera D ALCs are the first systems of its kind to offer accurate raised cosine EQ below 160Hz, which results in more precise elimination of room modes and optimization of the low-frequency performance of a system. Within the range, integrators will also appreciate the fact that Biamp now offers the only 8 x 150-watt ALC on the market, with competitors starting at 250 to 500 watts per channel, which may be expensive overkill for many applications.

Representing a significant technology evolution for Biamp, the Voltera D series also needs to integrate with the company's legacy in networked AV processing and distribution platform - still represented by the existing Tesira range of products - that being the reason why these ALCs are the only in the market to provide support for both AVB and Dante networks.

The new VenueTune software offers in-depth control through an intuitive graphical interface, which uses simple 2D floorplans and a staged workflow to guide system designers and installers. The software also provides extensive performance and usage logging over time, enabling IT personnel, AV pros, and venue managers the ability to optimize performance after installation.

"The Voltera D series is designed to provide extraordinary audio experiences for the most demanding applications where the audio must stay on and a protective mute isn’t acceptable," says Joe Andrulis, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at Biamp. "Through our new VenueTune software, installers and designers enjoy a simplified design process and deployment of Voltera D ALCs, including the ability to select what amplifiers to drive the speakers with and the ability to predict the current draw and heat dissipation. They also get powerful system tuning and comprehensive system performance monitoring."

All Voltera D models provide high power and channel density in a compact 1 RU enclosure for space savings while maintaining high efficiency and low idle power. The amplifier modules are capable of high peak voltage output and using power sharing can deliver up to 75% of the total amplifier power on any single channel. They also offer the option of either Lo-Z or Hi-Z per channel to support hybrid systems — including the ability to manage redundant media interfaces such as AVB, Dante, and AES67.

The Biamp Voltera D series targets a wide variety of applications, from houses of worship, to transportation and government buildings, to entertainment and sports venues. Much more details to follow at InfoComm 2024.
