Celebrate with colleagues, clients and friends, discover new connections and explore audio technology at AESNY 2023! That's the formal invitation from the Audio Engineering Society, as it welcomes everyone on its 75th Anniversary to a new era of experiences, with leading manufacturers and engineers demonstrating the latest solutions and products, with a comprehensive selection of workshops, panels, demonstrations, training, papers and more. All taking place at the AES New York 2023 Convention, Javits Convention Center, October 25 - 27, 2023.
On Wednesday, October 25 at 3pm, there is already a special session titled "The Evolution of AES - Celebrating the First 75 Years," where current AES President Bruce Olson, Bill Foster, AES Interim Executive Director, Agnieszka Roginska, AES Past President, AES President-Elect Leslie Gaston-Bird, and Lesley Ann Fogle, AES Conference Committee Vice Chair will discuss the past, present and future of the association.
"Our organization has enjoyed amazing growth over the course of the last 75 years. In the words of one of the Charter Members and the Chair of the AES Historical Committee Donald J Plunkett in 1997, "...when a few engineers interested in radio and sound met in early 1948 in New York, they met to discuss starting an organization that would be concerned with the rapid developments in the field of audio that had resulted from World War II research and engineering."
What started as a gathering of scientists and inventors has become a major force in all aspects of audio, including artists, practitioners, educators, manufacturers, and of course, scientists and inventors. The special session will explore the history of AES over the last 75 years, where some rare footage from the early days of AES will be presented.
Also on the first day of the convention, following the Opening Ceremonies and AES Awards, renowned music producer, sound designer, and composer Hank Shocklee will deliver the keynote speech. The AES NY 2023 Convention also highlights the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop. Hank Shocklee will share his journey and revisit the formative years of hip-hop, his groundbreaking work with Public Enemy, and his collaborations with an array of musical icons and contributions to an impressive list of film projects, including Ridley Scott's American Gangster, Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, and Ernest Dickerson's Juice.
Sampling in music is now a part of mainstream culture, and Hank Shocklee played a pivotal role in elevating the art of sampling. His techniques, including filtering, micro-loop sampling, and the use of sine waves to create kick drums and bass lines, continue to resonate throughout the music industry.
In addition to his music industry accolades, Hank Shocklee boasts a diverse portfolio that includes a 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a 2018 GRAMMY Hall of Fame induction, a 2004 induction into the National Recording Registry at the U.S. Library of Congress, and recognition as a 2021 inductee into the Consumer Technology (CT) Hall of Fame.
