APEX Releases New SMA-2 Compact 4-Channel Amplifier Module

April 28 2021, 01:10
Belgium manufacturer APEX introduced a new four-channel OEM amplifier module specifically designed for multi-way pro audio loudspeakers designs. The new Apex SMA-2 is capable of delivering up to 3000W on a single 4 Ohm channel and uses APEX’ unique GlidePath direct drive architecture, which is a proprietary Class-D technology where the DSP system is an integral part of the amplifier system, with a fully DC-coupled audio signal path.

Based in Beringen, Belgium, APEX has earned a reputation for developing high-quality, innovative speaker processing and network system management products for the AV and pro audio markets, both under its own name and in support of partner brands. Founded by managing director Paul Van Hees in 1991, in recent years APEX has seen strong growth, fueled by investment in R&D expertise and a strong culture of innovation.

Featuring onboard 64-bit DSP with a freely configurable signal path, the new APEX SMA-2 module provides an OEM solution for multi-way loudspeakers, subwoofers and rackmount amplifiers in professional installation applications. The output power for each amplifier channel is assignable, creating possibilities ranging from high power bridged submodules to four identical power modules or a combination of different power options. Possible configurations include 4x750W, 2x1500W, 1x3000W, plus 1x1500W and 2x750W combined.

The SMA-2 incorporates a switch mode power supply, two Class-D power amplifiers, and a powerful Analog Devices ADAU1462 DSP supported by high performance ESS Technology Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog conversion stages, all on a single, compact printed circuit board assembly. The module measures just 100mm x 250mm (3.9in x 9.8in) and is ready to serve worldwide from 100-240VAC, with Active Power Factor Correction ensuring efficient use of mains power.

The SMA-2 design benefits from APEX’s proprietary GlidePath direct drive technology, which fully integrates DSP and amplifier circuits, employing DC coupling throughout the signal path to reduce time offsets and distortion. GlidePath’s precise reproduction of high transients manages speaker cone excursion, minimizing distortion and prolonging speaker life by cutting mechanical wear.

“With SMA-2 we’re responding to the AV installation market’s requirement for small footprint products that don’t compromise on power or audio performance,” comments APEX Managing Director, Paul Van Hees. “The module is backed by our full ecosystem of audio networking, software, DSP and hardware options, allowing us to cut the time-to-market and R&D burden for the brands who partner with us.”

Like the existing SMA-1 two channel module, SMA-2 has been developed and built by APEX’s in-house team in Belgium.
