Technics Releases New SL-1300G Delta Sigma Drive Grand Class Turntable

September 6 2024, 01:10
During IFA 2024, Technics expanded its range of flagship turntables with the SL-1300G, a new hifi Grand Class turntable that uses the brand’s unique ΔΣ-Drive (Delta Sigma Drive) technology. Renowned for the power and precision of this motor control technology, first introduced in the SL-1200GR2 turntable in 2023, Technics took its direct drive technology to the next level and created an even more refined model. The Technics SL-1300G is a new hifi reference from the brand that kept turntables cool, even when they weren’t.

The new Technics SL-1300G turntable builds upon the company’s ΔΣ-Drive motor control technology and combines it with its more sophisticated iron-coreless motor, which has even impressed the engineering team for its sonic impact during the development process. According to Technics, this combination also helped eliminate the faintest of motor vibrations and improved the performance delivered by the ΔΣ-Drive, demonstrating once and for all the virtues of this direct drive motor control technique. Contributing to create the ultimate analog vinyl experience, the Technic SL-1300G is the ultimate demonstration of the company’s unique turntable expertise.

The ΔΣ-Drive in combination with the iron-coreless direct drive motor is capable of delivering a perfect sine wave signal, resulting in a super smooth rotational accuracy. In the SL-1300G Technics uses an iron-coreless double rotor/single stator motor, with a remarkably higher torque than the version with only one rotor/one stator, as used in the SL-1200GR2 turntable. Further research demonstrated the benefits of redesigning the motor control circuit board to further eliminate unwanted vibrations. The coil mounting circuit board was reinforced to further reduce any mechanical vibrations caused during rotation.

The usage of a more powerful motor also enabled Technics to add a massive new platter – another way to reduce mechanical vibrations during vinyl playback. And the heavier platter is another reason for the detailed and cleaner performance of the Technics SL-1300G turntable. This platter consists of three layers: aluminum die-cast for high rigidity; a top layer of 2mm-thick brass, thoroughly fixed to the die-cast platter, helping to minimize vibration and add touch & feel; and finally, a heavy layer of rubber underneath the platter to dampen the structure, resulting in an ultimately pure tracking and highest signal precision.

Because the heavier platter also means higher mass inertia, the rotational accuracy of the SL-1300G is absolute. As usual with Technics turntables of the latest generation, thanks to the rotation feedback system based on speed detection by an optical encoder, also the precision of the rotational speed is exceptional in the new SL-1300G.

All the qualities of the mechanical and electronic design of the direct drive system are further supported by a new Multi-stage Silent Power Supply, similar to the one used in the Technics reference turntable SL-1000R. This power supply working at over 100kHz is filtered through a noise canceling circuit that injects the reversed-phase of any actual noise it generates. The method ensures an extremely low noise floor, enabling exceptional signal-to-noise ratio.

Additional features of the Technics SL-1300G turntable include a 2-layered, aluminum die-cast and BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound) bottom chassis, with increased thickness for higher rigidity and additional damping. The chassis is further reinforced with a newly designed rib structure to mechanically isolate the motor and the tonearm, and ensure improved tracking and the highest fidelity.

The high-sensitivity S-shaped aluminum tonearm with high-precision bearings, enables improved motion sensitivity and precision, while highly effective isolation feet avoid the retransmission of any external vibrations for further tracking precision. The overall design helps define the hifi performance credentials of the new SL-1300G, maintaining and respecting the minimalistic and highly recognizable lines of a Technics  turntable.

Finally, Technics ensured that the packaging for the new SL-1300G is free of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), using shaped cardboard to protect the product during transport, including also a separate cardboard box for the accessories. Technics is currently working to expand this new type of packaging to all other products in its catalog and integrate more recyclable materials.

The new SL-1300G turntable will be available in December 2024, retailing for USD $3,299.99.
