About Vance Dickason

Vance Dickason has been working as a professional in the loudspeaker industry since 1974. A contributing editor to Speaker Builder magazine (now audioXpress) since 1986, in November 1987 he became editor of Voice Coil, the monthly Periodical for the Loudspeaker Industry, today published by KCK Media Corp. His globally acclaimed book Loudspeaker Design Cookbook is now in its 8th Edition, published by KCK Media. A life member of the Audio Engineering Society, Vance received the 1995 AES Citation Award for his long term contribution to audio education, and the 2013 Beryllium Award, Lifetime achievement from ALMA (Associating of Loudspeaker Manufacturers and Acoustics, now ALTI Association). Since 2001, he also does business as Vance Dickason Consultancy based out of Portland, Oregon, working as an independent engineering consultant to loudspeaker manufacturers.

Thiel Audio Launches 3rd Avenue Loudspeaker Series

Thiel Audio Introduced the TT1 three-way Loudspeaker at the 2015 CES Show. The TT1, together with the previously introduced bookshelf TM3, is part of the company’s new 3rd Avenue Collection and the first Thiel Audio speaker to be assembled in its new Nashville facility. It represents a novel approach to design and manufacturing, in line with the company’s long-term vision for the high-end brand.

Revel Makes OEM Audio System for Ford Lincoln

Revel, the Harman high-end home-audio brand, entered into a 10-year agreement to offer Revel brand OEM audio systems installed in Ford Lincoln automobiles. This agreement is the first time the Revel brand will appear in a factory car audio sound system, as was done previously with the Harman JBL and Infinity brands.

In mid-August 2013, the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden undertook a study to compare four brands of measurement microphones. The standards bureau had been asked to purchase four microphones of the same type from four different measurement microphone manufactures — Brüel & Kjær, BSWA, G.R.A.S. Sound and Vibration A/S, and PCB Piezotronics.

LOUDSOFT has just released the new FINEBox 2015 nonlinear high-power enclosure design software for designing hi-fi, PA, and even able to simulate micro speakers and very small volumes, including headphone rear cavities and holes. Among many new possibilities, the latest version of FINEBox now displays driver sensitivity in Maximum Theoretical Sensitivity, useful for microspeakers, and Standard LOUDSOFT SPL Sensitivity.

Artison RCC Nano 1 Mini-Subwoofer Promoted as The World’s Smallest High-Performance Subwoofer

Artison, the Nevada-based loudspeaker manufacturer launched its first crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter, to raise money to build and market a small high-performance DSP subwoofer and to promote the product to the average person. The project’s funding goal was not reached, achieving only $38,729 of the pledged goal of $250,000. Still, probably the marketing goals were achieved.

My recent visit to the new LinearX headquarters in Battle Ground, WA, confirmed that this very powerful new audio analyzer is finally in production. The first LX500 release will be the frequency domain version and the list of features is seriously impressive.
