Education:
MSEE (Masters degree in Electrical Engineering) Occupation: Alan is currently employed in the marketing field.
Member Status:
He has been an audioXpress subscriber “in one form or another” since the late 1990s. Alan said he subscribes to the magazine because he wants to keep up with the latest in audio news, especially when it involves loudspeakers. He also enjoys getting new ideas from the DIY articles.
Audio Interests:
Alan is mainly interested in loudspeakers, in particular he enjoys full-range speakers, computer audio components, and small, powered loudspeakers.
Most Recent Purchase:
Alan recently bought a NuForce uDAC-2, which is a high-performance USB (DAC) that connects your PC’s audio with your home stereo, desktop sound system, or headphones.
Current Audio Projects:
Alan is working on a mini powered full-range speaker pair and a subwoofer to go with them. He is building a powered two-way using a Tang Band W5-1685 5” Underhung Midbass Driver and a HiVi TN28 Fabric Dome Tweeter (top-mount). His goal is to minimize the number of components in his system. He likes to use a DAC and powered speakers and nothing else—no stand-alone preamplifiers or amplifiers—just a digital source, the DAC, and the powered speakers. His challenge is finding a high-quality plate amplifier for the speakers since he does not plan to build one from scratch. Alan has yet to finalize the cabinet design, so he still has some flexibility.
Dream System:
Alan said he is not particularly brand specific when it comes to his dream system. However, his ideal audio setup would be a 7.1 surround-sound system with a high-quality projector and four 50” monitors to watch sports. He would include a high-definition music system that contains a DAC, a powered speaker pair, and a subwoofer.
