Alta Audio Receives US Patent for its XTL II Hybrid Transmission Line Technology

Alta Audio, the company created by industry veteran Michael Levy, announced that it received US patent 11917361B2 for its XTL Transmission Line technology. Recently introduced in the company's latest Aphrodite four-way loudspeaker, updating an already patented original technology that applies the cabinet internal geometry to tune the frequency response, the new approach evolves to a hybrid transmission line, a ported enclosure design that Michael Levy says greatly increases power handling, lowers distortion, and extends bass frequencies.

In this article, James Croft discusses a patent granted to Curtis Graber (Woodburn, IN) that describes a radial acoustic speaker assembly including a transducer and a plurality of segmented spiral horns acoustically coupled to the transducer, each with its acoustical path. This new patent by prolific audio inventor, Curtis Graber, uses a new multi-spiral waveguide structure driven by a single transducer and has clear advantages over prior art. The brand new generation of Beyma compression drivers originates from an intense R&D effort and two patent-pending innovations. Unveiled at ISE 2013, Beyma's four base designs with 2 throat sizes, 4 voice coil diameters, 3 diaphragm materials and 2 magnet types, allow for a total of 12 new models (for now). Scheduled to be launched progressively during 2023, these new Beyma state-of-the-art high frequency transducers deliver new exciting possibilities for speaker designs.

The patent reviewed here was granted to inventors Robert G. Johnston (Amprior Ontario, CA), and Sanford M.Gross (Owings Mills, MD), respectively the head of engineering of GoldenEar Technology, and one of its co-founders. The patent describes a subwoofer with two drivers on each side plus one passive radiator facing up and one passive radiator facing down. The passive radiator facing down effectively couples acoustic energy at very low frequencies into the floor.

The patent describes a generic acoustic high displacement transducer system, containing a diaphragm position sensing module, a controller with a transmitter, so that the voice coil moves at least partially in response to the control signal.
