Fohhn Audio AG announced the release of its new PT-70 loudspeaker system. What makes the PT-70 design unique is its so-called Convertible Dispersion Technology (CDT), registered as a utility model, enabling it to be manually switched between cardioid and vented operation modes. When the PT-70 is used as a cardioid system, significantly less sound is emitted from the back of the speaker. In a previous article (Loudspeaker Sensitivity: What’s a Watt Anyway? April 2010 Voice Coil), I examined the topic of loudspeaker sensitivity and how it may or may not relate to the overall sound pressure level (SPL) produced by a loudspeaker. The output capability of the amplifier driving the loudspeaker is of equal importance to achieving the target SPL from the direct field of a loudspeaker.
