Test Bench: The UF295FAS Thin-Profile Dipole 10" Woofer from Neotera

This new 10" thin-profile woofer comes from Neotera, a new company headquartered in Sweden, founded by a diverse group of loudspeaker/electronic design veterans. Maurizio Servadio is the engineer who invented the Neotera Ultraflat technology and is based in Italy where the UF295FAS is manufactured. This thin-profile woofer with a depth of 2.6" and with a low-frequency response down to 29Hz, is specifically designed for dipole system applications. Neotera Audio, which has manufacturing in Italy and engineering in Sweden, has recently released two rather interesting thin-profile 10" woofers, the UF295CBS, and the UF295FAS. Both woofers have a voice coil and motor structure located around the rim of the cone assembly, and both use and front and rear facing NBR surrounds for compliance. The UF295CBS was designed for small closed box subwoofer applications, while the UF295FAS is a a pure dipole woofer with a Fiberglass/Rohacell dome suspended directly on the voice coil.

DB Enterprises announced availability of four new off-the-shelf headphone drivers from VM Sound using liquid silicone rubber (LSR) surround technology. Available in 7mm, 9.2mm, 13.4mm, and 40mm sizes, these drivers are available with different diaphragm materials, including Nomex, aluminum and magnesium alloy. VM Sound's Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) surrounds can be used with paper, metal or composite drivers, enabling a very high precision, high performance, and high yield method of constructing headphone drivers and microspeakers.

This month’s Test Bench includes a very high-end 6″ home audio driver, coming from Morel. This is a hybrid neodymium/ferrite motor, the 6.0″ carbon fiber/Nextel sandwich cone SCW 636, a by-product of the Fat Lady project, Morel’s flagship loudspeaker. Similar to the cabinet utilized in the Fat Lady, the Morel SCW 636 uses a three-layer composite cone and dust cap that combines carbon fiber/Rohacell/carbon fiber that is both lightweight and very stiff.
