GaN Systems to Be Acquired by Infineon Technologies

Infineon Technologies AG and GaN Systems Inc. announced that the companies have signed a definitive agreement under which Infineon will acquire GaN Systems for US$830 million. GaN Systems is a global technology leader in the development of GaN-based solutions for power conversion. The company is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and has more than 200 employees. With the acquisition Infineon aims to strengthen its GaN portfolio.

Toshiba Develops SiC MOSFET with Embedded Schottky Barrier Diode that Delivers Low On-Resistance and High Reliability

Toshiba developed an SiC metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) that arranges embedded Schottky barrier diodes (SBD) in a check pattern to realize both low on-resistance and high reliability. Toshiba has confirmed that the design secures an approximately 20% reduction in on-resistance (RonA - the resistance value between the drain and source of a MOSFET during operation) against its current SiC MOSFET, with no loss of reliability.

EPC Introduces 12V – 48V 500W GaN Boost Converter in Collaboration With Renesas

EPC announced the availability of the EPC9166, a 500W DC-DC demo board that converts a 12V input to 48V output. The EPC9166 demo board demonstrates the Renesas ISL81807 80V two-phase synchronous boost controller with the latest generation EPC2218 eGaN FETs from EPC to achieve greater than 96.5% efficiency in a 12V input to 48V regulated output conversion with 500kHz switching frequency. The output voltage can be configured to 36V, 48V, and 60V. The board can deliver 480W power without a heatsink.

Japanese advanced semiconductor solutions manufacturer Renesas Electronics, and Dialog Semiconductor, an established supplier in power management, charging, AC/DC power conversion, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology solutions, announced they have reached an agreement towards an all-cash acquisition by Renesas of the entire capital of Dialog for EUR 67.50 per share, representing a total equity value of approximately EUR 4.9 billion (5.8 billion USD).

The devices are engineered for small size, low quiescent current and high efficiency at all values of load current, to save energy and real-estate in keep-alive connected devices such as asset trackers, wearables, smart sensors and smart meters. Leveraging synchronous rectification, efficiency is 92% at 400 mA full load and 95% when delivering just 1 mA.

Panasonic Corporation announced that it will start mass production of a high-speed gate driver (AN34092B) optimized for driving its GaN power transistor X-GaN in November 2016. The company will also start mass production of two types of X-GaN (PGA26E07BA and PGA26E19BA) and provide solutions in combination with high-speed gate drivers. The high-speed gate driver for X-GaN power transistors contributes to space and energy savings in power conversion applications.
