Brane Audio RAD Speaker Technology Named in TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024

As TIME revealed its annual list of the Best Inventions, which features 200 product, technologies and innovations changing our lives, there was a surprising mention of Brane Audio's Brane X portable speaker as a winner in the Entertainment & Gaming category. As audioXpress and Voice Coil readers learned earlier - and coincidently James Croft writes about in Voice Coil November 2024 - the company's Repel-Attract-Driver (RAD) that is part of the Brane X design, is indeed the first effective embodiment of a negative-spring woofer that bends Hofmann’s Iron Law.

Back in 2020, Barry Vogel, the director of the Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International (ALTI) Association called me excitedly about Niron Magnetics and about a new magnet material developed from research at the University of Minnesota. Iron Nitride (FeN) was perhaps the biggest news in magnets in 40 years. Composed of common elements — Iron and Nitrogen - the potential of permanent magnets from Niron could be a breakthrough and a game-changer for the audio industry.

Niron Magnetics, the company pioneering the world's first high-performance, rare earth-free permanent magnets, announced it has received $25 million in new strategic funding from Samsung Ventures, Allison Transmission, and Magna. This investment will strengthen Niron's ability to expand its production facilities, scale manufacturing capacity for exclusive customer programs, and accelerate the commercialization of Niron's Clean Earth Magnet technology.

Most of us assume that neodymium must only come from China. Yet, rare earth ore is available in California, and reshoring neo-magnet production, including recycling neodymium, is now accelerating in the US. Mike Klasco (Menlo Scientific), tipped off by Salvador Magdaleno (Salvador Consultant), writes about the first manufacturing operation that is ready to deliver neodymium permanent magnets in the United States. A group of stakeholders from the Rare Earth supply chain met recently for The Global Rare Earth Industry Association Conference, June 25- 27 in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting was also the first General Assembly to establish a global association to develop an integrated, de-risked and sustainable value chain for rare earth materials. The Rare Earth Industry Association (REIA) was founded by 12 organisations, including Italian loudspeaker manufacturer B&C Speakers, which was already part of a European-funded project committed to the reuse of rare-earth magnets.
