Synaptics Launches the Next Generation of Astra Multimodal Edge AI Processors

Synaptics announced the new Astra SL2600 Series of multimodal Edge AI processors designed to deliver new levels of power and performance in connected smart devices. The Astra SL2600 series enables cost-effective intelligent designs that are able to process audio, voice, text, and video on-device. The first product line combines processing pipelines, AI acceleration, and the industry’s first implementation of the Google Coral NPU, an open, RISC-V–based neural processing architecture that supports major machine learning frameworks.

Renesas Sets New MCU Performance Bar with 1-GHz RA8P1 Devices with AI Acceleration

Renesas Electronics introduced the RA8P1 microcontroller (MCU) Group targeted at Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications, as well as real-time analytics. Designed for running AI on device, the new MCUs establish a new performance level by combining 1GHz Arm Cortex-M85 and 250MHz Cortex-M33 CPU cores with the Arm Ethos-U55 Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This combination delivers the highest CPU performance of over 7300 CoreMarks and AI performance of 256 GOPS at 500MHz.

Synaptics announced that Rahul Patel has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, and a Director of the company. The semiconductor industry executive with experience at Qualcomm and Broadcom will drive the company’s next chapter of innovation and growth in Processing, Connectivity, and Sensing. Patel succeeds Synaptics CFO Ken Rizvi, who has served as the company’s Interim CEO since February 2025, and will continue to serve as the company’s CFO.

Qualcomm Acquires On-Device Machine Learning Pioneer Edge Impulse

A Californian company that was instrumental in multiple pioneering efforts to run machine learning on-device, particularly for voice recognition, Edge Impulse has agreed to be acquired by Qualcomm, which is aiming to boost its own development ecosystem for edge AI applications. Edge Impulse, founded in 2019 with the mission to streamline the creation of AI and machine learning models in embedded systems, says it will remain open to other platforms, while accelerating integration with Qualcomm devices and development kits.

Qualcomm Unveils S7 Pro Snapdragon Sound Platform With Micro-Power Wi-Fi and 24-bit/192kHz Lossless Streaming

During its Snapdragon Summit event Qualcomm unveiled the latest S7 and S7 Pro Gen1 Sound platforms, which will soon power a new generation of advanced audio products. The new platforms offer five times the compute power, three times the DSP processing power, and almost 100 times on-device AI processing power compared to the previous generation. A real differentiator is the use of micro-power Wi-Fi to extend wireless audio range and support for up to 192kHz lossless music quality in the S7 Pro.
