Wireless Innovation Accelerates in 2022 with Wi-Fi 6 and UWB

According to global technology intelligence firm ABI Research, 2022 will represent a key year for wireless connectivity innovation as Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and Ultra-Wideband adoption accelerates across a growing number of end markets. The latest wireless technologies will see strong double-digit growth as 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E shipments triple in the next year, reaching well over 1.5 billion annual chipset shipments. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) devices are expected to reach nearly half-a-billion units as adoption increases within smartphones, wearables, speakers, personal trackers, and location tracking (RTLS) applications, forecasts ABI Research.

This article offers a useful perspective regarding the guidance documents published by the US Food and Drug Administration regarding improved access to hearing aid technology. The agency proposes a rule to establish a new category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids - to be sold directly to consumers in stores or online without a medical exam or a fitting by an audiologist. But most audio manufacturers are better off by not pursuing this FDA-approved OTC market. Doing so will simply hinder critical experimentation and innovation.

Fraunhofer IIS, the primary developer of the MPEG-H 3D Audio standard, announced that Sony Corporation (Sony) has licensed Fraunhofer’s MPEG-H 3D Audio Baseline Profile Decoder software and joined the MPEG-H Trademark Program. Market research firm Parks Associates released its latest Consumer Insights Dashboard, a new ongoing service that analyzes the firm's quarterly surveys of 10,000 US broadband households to track consumer adoption of home devices and services. Its Consumer Electronics Dashboard reveals that among the most commonly adopted CE device categories, smart TVs and smart speakers/displays showed significant growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Smart TVs reached 56%, while smart speakers/displays reached 53%.
