Innovative Speaker Drivers and Microspeakers in Voice Coil May 2022

In this month’s Voice Coil Focus, Mike Klasco writes about Innovative Speaker Drivers, and there is an updated Microspeaker Vendor Directory for 2022, with additional subdirectories on MEMS speaker transducers and Haptic Actuator devices for mobile devices. On this month’s Test Bench, Vance Dickason characterizes two full-range woofers: the E180HE-44 from the Dayton Audio Epique home audio line-up, and the Faital Pro 2FE24 2.5” small woofer targeting pro audio applications.

This Test Bench examines a new pro sound woofer from Faital Pro. The Faital Pro 6” 6RS140 pro sound woofer has a power handling rating of 200 W (AES) and targets applications as a midbass or midrange in three-way stage or studio monitors, as well as midrange arrays in large PA systems. The frame is a proprietary four-spoke cast-aluminum frame, and like many small diameter drivers, it does not have a venting below the spider mounting area. Cooling for this driver is provided by a 20 mm diameter pole vent with a 22 mm flared exit. This article was originally published in Voice Coil, July 2019.

This Test Bench characterizes Faital Pro’s new 6” 6PR160 pro sound midwoofer/midrange. This is a driver from the Italian pro sound OEM’s extensive line of high power handling mid-bass woofers. Applications for the 6” 6PR160 include use as midbass or midrange in three-way stage or studio monitors, as well as midrange arrays in large PA systems. On Test Bench, Vance Dickason characterizes the new 6” 6PR160 pro sound midwoofer from Faital Pro, and the new SW280WA-01 shallow mount 10" home audio subwoofer, from Wavecor.

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) Milan 144th International Convention, May 23–26, 2018, was a small but well-attended event, extremely enjoyable for all those that participated. As always, a mix of audio industry professionals, students, educators, and top brands and audio service providers from around the world met "for the purpose of advancing the art and science of audio engineering."

This month’s Test Bench samples came from a premier Italian Pro Sound OEM driver manufacturer. From Faital Pro, I received the HF108R compression driver coupled with a LTH102 60° × 50° horn. The HF108R is the latest in Faital Pro’s series of Ketone Polymer diaphragm 1” compression drivers. I reviewed the HF108 compression driver in April 2015, and included some data on the HF108R.
