AES70 is an open control and monitoring standard for professional audio and AV media network devices. From a single device and controller, to networks with almost any number of devices and multiple controllers, AES70 provides for powerful, high speed, low cost, robust system control and monitoring of devices from different manufacturers. The Audio Engineering Society has announced a series of webinars hosted by the AES Standards Committee that will illuminate the inner workings of the often complex, yet necessary, set of rules by which engineers and equipment manufacturers abide and the increasingly important role of the AES and its work to establish audio standards and practices that ensure interoperability worldwide. The initiative from the AES Standards Committee shines a light on Audio Standards development, while seeking input and experience from the global audio community.

Centre stage on the OCA Alliance booth at the recent ISE show was the expanded feature set of the new AES70-2018 revision of the open control and monitoring standard for professional audio and AV media networks. The result of several years of collaborative work within the OCA Alliance and the AES, AES70-2018 is an evolutionary upgrade providing numerous new and improved features.

During my time at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2019 show, I looked closely at how companies are dealing with the transition to IP networks, how prevalent some proprietary technologies still are in commercial installation and AV in particular (e.g., HDBaseT), and how manufacturers are introducing new products and concepts to integrate those networked systems, in particular those protocols that support AES67 audio and the latest SMPTE ST-2110 suite of standards in general.

The program offers significant marketing and public relations exposure to standards-sustaining manufacturers, organizations and individuals supporting the development of standards that underlie fundamental technology in the audio industry.

Media Networking Alliance Promotes Biggest AES67 Live Demo at NAB 2016

At the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, the Media Networking Alliance (MNA) hosted an expanded live AES67 demonstration between networked components operating with RAVENNA, Dante and Livewire AoIP transports. This was the largest demonstration of AoIP interoperability so far, following first public demonstrations at the AES NY convention and ISE 2016 exhibition.

OCA Alliance confirmed that Open Control Architecture (OCA) – an open control and monitoring standard for professional audio and AV media network devices – has been officially standardized on 4 January 2016 by the Audio Engineering Society Standards Committee (AESSC) in the newly published AES70-2015 standard for audio applications of networks - Open Control Architecture.

AES67-2015 Revision Confirms Stability of the Audio Network Interoperability Standard

A maintenance revision to AES67-2013 – the AES standard for high-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability – has been issued. The revision, called AES67-2015, clarifies some of the interoperability requirements, based on general implementation and “plugfest” experience.
