Trinnov Audio Launches NOVA Room Acoustics Optimizer

May 5 2023, 06:45
Trinnov Audio, a pioneer in active acoustic technologies and manufacturer of reference audio processors for home theater, high-end hi-fi, professional audio and commercial cinemas, introduced NOVA, it's latest hardware processor and studio interface. NOVA essentially provides an updated platform to run Trinnov's loudspeaker/room optimization technology, while handling all studio monitoring duties and acting as a Dante studio interface. With the new hardware solution Trinnov also introduces much-improved control apps.

Trinnov has been working in the field of audio processing and room acoustics optimization since 2005 and its products have been recognized as leading solutions in this field. Always proposing closely integrated hardware and software solutions, the French company developed an extremely detailed and accurate approach with its Optimizer technology, primarily intended for professional applications. Gradually, it evolved to other applications where the company’s sophisticated algorithms proved very effective, such as high-end home theater.

An essential part of the company's Optimizer solution, the unique Trinnov 3D Measurement Microphone was developed to increase the accuracy and accelerate acoustic measurements using four calibrated microphone capsules in a tetrahedral arrangement. This allows feeding timing information from a single sweep and helping to create a tridimensional acoustic mapping.

Trinnov now introduced NOVA, the first of a new generation of pro audio products which will be coming to market after 4 years of extensive research and development across multiple areas. NOVA is based on an entirely redesigned platform which redefines the way Trinnov designs audio processors. The new hardware platform combines greater modularity, higher performance, enhanced reliability and native support for audio-over-IP. The new hardware was also designed with the user experience in mind, enabling for more streamlined setup and day to day operations.

"Our new hardware architecture provides more modularity and possibilities in terms of product development, starting with the ability to make PC-less and fan-less products, such as NOVA! This new architecture also allows us to design products around single electronic boards for optimum efficiency, reliability, and transportability," says Arnaud Laborie, CEO and co-founder.

NOVA differs from the previous product generation in that its new Audio Core is based on an ARM processor that provides the computational power necessary for full Trinnov processing of a limited number of channels, without the need of an additional CPU or fans.

"NOVA will be introduced in the year of our 20th anniversary. This new platform enables us to address a wider market with more cost-effective solutions for stereo and small surround applications, and ultimately to support our continued growth as a business. We developed it with the same commitment to performance and sustainability as the previous platform. This includes the ability to develop and maintain the same software across both hardware platforms," adds Arnaud Laborie.

NOVA was also designed to become a new essential studio interface, providing 3 main functions with Optimizer as its main feature. NOVA can process and optimize up to 6 channels of Trinnov’s room correction and acoustic optimization technology, including bass management. But more than a digital acoustic processor, it is also a powerful monitoring controller with no limitations in mind, allowing studio engineers to select different speaker sets or create all kinds of downmixes and alternate cues. NOVA is also Avid EUCON compliant, which allows advanced monitoring control integration with Avid-based studio systems.

Finally, via the Dante Virtual Sound card, NOVA can be used as an audio interface for direct DAW-to-monitoring integration. On its front panel, the single rack unit combines an Ethercon input for the dedicated Trinnov calibration microphone, direct stereo headphone output, USB port for the dedicated "La Remote" hardware remote controller with display, and a standby / mute button with LED status. Inside, NOVA combines 64-bit floating point processing with 24-bit/192kHz AD and DA converters offering 115dB (A-Weighted, ref. +18dBu) of dynamic range and > 110dB, 1kHz@0dBFS of THD+N on the analog outputs.

On the connections side, the basic NOVA unit includes one ADAT or SPDIF optical input, one SPDIF coaxial input, two Ethernet ports for Dante (8in/8out), one AES3 XLR stereo output, two XLR balanced inputs, four jack balanced inputs and 6x XLR balanced outputs. The IPV4 dual connector with configurable integrated switch supports flexible modes of network connectivity, including DHCP / Auto-IP link local / fixed IP and Eucon compatibility via the "Trinnov App".

The Trinnov app is available for Windows or macOS, and supports auto discovery of the NOVA processor on a local network, allowing users to control all the main processing features and preset selection. For NOVA, Trinnov introduced a completely redesigned web-based interface with built-in help and a clear menu structure. Trinnov is also introducing a very complete iOS control app, which will benefit from the same web-based design, creating a powerful and convenient wireless control solution for the studio.

The NOVA platform now comes bundled with the new Trinnov etherCON 3D measurement microphone. The new model was specifically designed for the new hardware. The fundamental design is the same, with four mic elements in a the same tetrahedral arrangement, creating an omnidirectional polar pattern with a 20Hz to 24kHz frequency response. The difference is that the new microphone has been updated with phantom power, integrated memory, and automated steps to facilitate calibration. Together with Trinnov's unique algorithms, the microphone is able to precisely locate speaker positions and detect early reflections.

NOVA is expected to start shipping in June 2023. With the launch of NOVA, Trinnov has also announced the intention to discontinue its original ST2 Pro and ST2 HiFi systems, introduced in 2010.
