On January 26, 2016, major sponsor RØDE Microphones recorded and filmed a breathtaking performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op.125 by the storied Belgian orchestra, Anima Eterna. The entire concert is available to buy from the RØDE Store on DVD and Blu-ray, or can be downloaded from Vimeo for FREE. The audiophile-grade 24-bit/96kHz audio file is also available for free download.
Recorded by multi-Grammy winning recording producer Tony Faulkner at Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House using experimental RØDE tube microphones, the final concert of the 2016 Sydney Festival captures Anima Eterna and the Australian Brandenburg Choir in glorious clarity and depth performing Beethoven’s masterpiece. As Tony puts it, Beethoven’s 9th is, “for a lot of people, the greatest symphony ever written.”
Under the guidance of conductor Jos Van Immerseel, Anima Eterna stages historically informed performances through the use of period-relevant instruments to worldwide acclaim. The Sydney Morning Herald gave the performance a dazzling ****1/2 out of five stars, saying, “Anima Eterna’s performance was revealing and rewarding… drawing one into an intricate web of sound with renewed wonder.”
Filmed by Peter Butler and the RØDE film production team, the result is a lush, enervating and grand recording, an experience to be savored. Accompanying the full symphony performance is a behind-the-scenes featurette and extensive interview with recording producer Tony Faulkner.
