Italian pro audio manufacturer Outline announced its all-new Architectural Series, a range of loudspeakers designed specifically to enable integrators to meet the aesthetic and performance demands of architects, interior designers and clients who want powerful but discreet audio systems. With multiple form-factors Outline's Architectural Series draws inspiration from modern consumer speaker trends, and loudspeaker form-factors with pro audio performance.
Comprising four streamlined loudspeakers designs, Outline manages to offer the features and performance levels required by integrators of professional audio systems, in minimalistic systems, available in black and white. The Outline Ai41 and Ai81 ultra-compact columns, can be freely matched with the Charlie 4 cube and the dedicated AS6 micro-sub, all matched with a complementary selection of mounting accessories, the primary focus of the new range being to deliver premium sound quality.
Created by Outline’s engineering team to solve the problem of delivering rich, natural audio from the smallest possible footprint, Charlie 4 re-writes the rules on what’s possible from a loudspeaker that fits in the palm of your hand. Despite its diminutive size and weight, this loudspeaker produces rich, highly intelligible audio (whether pre-recorded or from a live source) and is powerful enough to deliver it across a surprisingly wide area.
As Outline explains, despite their diminutive size, each of the mid-high speaker modules delivers perfectly balanced audio, whether from playback or live sound sources, while the AS6 dedicated subwoofer provides low-frequency reinforcement that totally belies its dimensions. All four speakers are able to produce maximum SPLs far in advance of what one might reasonably expect from such a design.
The Charlie 4 design features a brand new 4" full-range driver created by Outline’s engineers just for this product, optimized to deliver the same performance of larger transducers in a unit a fraction of the size. Single-driver designs enjoy a major sonic advantage in that they do not suffer from the phase anomalies caused by a crossover and so produce the most natural and uncolored sound. Outline engineers extended this advantage by improving off-axis performance, a key feature for ultra-compact, multi-application loudspeaker systems. Contained within an enclosure measuring just 12 cubic centimeters (4.7"), and weighing only 1.55 Kg, this integrated design is not just aesthetically pleasing, but also an extremely versatile solution.
Being professional audio systems, performance of the mid-high modules Ai41 and Ai81 is made possible by Outline’s inclusion of an ‘MTM’ configuration of midrange and HF elements that deliver the imaging and precision coverage required, even from such a compact chassis. This proven design, in which multiple transducers are symmetrically arranged within an enclosure, can almost completely eliminate unwanted lobing effects in the radiating sphere of a loudspeaker, Outline highlights.
"This is a key factor in the system’s exceptional intelligibility, particularly for speech, which makes it perfect for projects where that must be achieved with minimum-possible visual impact - examples include meeting and presentation spaces, houses of worship, museums and boardrooms," the company states. "Its ability to reproduce music to a hi-fi standard further extends its usefulness into applications including domestic installations, hotels, retail and leisure."
The entire Outline Architectural Series also features an impressive degree of water resistance, which makes it an obvious choice for high-humidity locations such as spas, swimming pools, leisure centers, gyms and sports clubs.
All four modules are fully passive, minimizing the number of amplifier channels required to operate them effectively. Outline’s own L3000 super-compact DSP-equipped power amplifier is recommended as the ideal partner for the Architectural Series, and the most unobtrusive installations.
With the new Architectural Series, Outline combined Italian design flair with world-class acoustic engineering to produce an innovative and incredibly useful series of products for the system integrator - elegance and function in perfect harmony.
