Lindell Audio LiN2A Vintage Leveling Amplifier Refreshes Dynamics Processing

December 12 2022, 00:35
Boutique recording equipment maker Lindell Audio announced availability of its LiN2A Vintage Leveling Amplifier — authentically reproducing the tonal quality and ease-of-use of the de-facto dynamics processor of the past 60 years with its latest release, ready for today’s studio setups. According to the Kungälv, Sweden-based company, the aptly-named Vintage Leveling Amplifier is designed for the plug-in generation looking for fool-proof hardware.
Lindell Audio was founded in 2010 by Swedish music producer and songwriter Tobias Lindell, which like many other recording industry professionals decided he wanted to use the classic equipment that were common in the studios of the fifties and the sixties. Not happy with what he could find, and certain that there is always room to do better, he started designing and building its own systems. Proudly designed in Sweden like all Lindell Audio products, the LiN2A pays tribute to the classical outboard studio processors, while focusing on the properties that are most sought-after.

The simplistic front and rear panels of the the LiN2A will be instantly recognized by all the users of the countless plugin emulations of the famous Teletronix LA2A tube-powered optical compressor and limiter. To deliver the instant satisfaction of the 2A-style compression, the new Lindell Audio LiN2A forgoes the conventional ratio, attack, and release controls of other compressors in favor of a simple two-knob — Gain (up to 40dB ±1dB) and Peak Reduction. Augmenting the program-dependent responsiveness of the original opto-compressor, this new hardware unit was designed to make the process effective. As Lindell Audio describes, a simple interface that belies its versatility, and is impossible for anyone to make it sound bad.

Thanks to its Black Lion Audio T4BLA Custom T4B optocell element, the LiN2A can effortlessly deliver smooth gain reduction and transparency — ideal for transparent uses in vocals as in the original LA2A. Creatively combining this with a dynamically responsive Compress (≈3:1) or hard Limit (∞:1) Mode makes for true tube-driven optical compression and limiting with ultra-fast attack and level-dependent release — dictated by that Black Lion Audio T4BLA Custom T4B optocell element. The results deliver the tonal quality and ease-of- use of the LA2A in a unit manufactured for today’s studio setups.

Inside the 2U rack-mount design are also two US-manufactured Cinemag transformers. A vintage-style VU (Volume Unit) meter with Output +4, Output +10, and Gain Reduction metering options, is the center of the front panel, while the rear panel offers simple balanced 1⁄4-inch TRS jacks as input and output to ensure easy connectivity between the LiN2A and other analog hardware.

Lindell Audio’s LiN2A is shipping and available at a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) of $699.00 USD. RAD Distribution is also the exclusive North American distributor for Lindell Audio products.
