KEF Introduces Q Series MAT Speaker Family

September 26 2024, 13:00
Since 1961, KEF helped redefine home audio with a stream of innovations from the early adoption of synthetic materials to the world's first coincident-source speaker driver, Uni-Q. Introduced in 1988, Uni-Q has been present in nearly every KEF design ever since. To make high-fidelity audio experiences more accessible and versatile, KEF now introduced the successor to its Q Series family, updated with the 12th generation Uni-Q driver array featuring Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT).

The new KEF Q Series MAT lineup was created to bring high-fidelity sound to more people than ever before, combining a modern design with cutting-edge technology. The passive speaker range has evolved once more in its 9th iteration since 1991, leveraging the latest 12th generation Uni-Q driver array and cutting-edge analysis techniques. The new Q Series MAT family, which includes traditional models for stereo setups and also a complete home cinema system, has been carefully fine-tuned, including a crossover redesign that refines the signal path response even more.

The comprehensive lineup of eight speakers is designed to suit the needs of those looking to elevate their at-home audio experience through stereo or multichannel home theater configurations. Pivotal to the new KEF Q Series MAT lineup is the integration of Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), that takes the performance of the latest 12th generation Uni-Q driver array to another level in terms of accuracy and clarity. MAT is a highly complex maze-like structure that acts as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound at the rear of the driver, reducing distortion.

The latest 12th generation Uni-Q driver array, redesigned with MAT, is found in all eight models of the new Q Series. Redesigned to maximize the performance improvements that MAT delivers, the Uni-Q drivers feature a conical waveguide that couples the tweeter dome to the metamaterial absorber. The re-engineered tweeter gap damper strategically places two rings of porous material to tame the resonances and imperfections, making all the models in the Q Series sound more transparent and lifelike than ever.

For improved detail and clarity, specific models within the Q Series range have been upgraded from a 2.5-way to a 3-way speaker design. These speakers include the Q11 Meta, Q7 Meta, Q Concerto Meta, and Q6 Meta. This updated configuration separates the frequency ranges, with the Uni-Q driver handling the high and midrange frequencies, and a newly designed bass driver providing a stronger, deep and clean bass.

The eight distinct models in the Q Series MAT range extend from two 3-way floor-standing models - the Q11 Meta and Q7 Meta - to a selection of bookshelf speakers including the 3-way Q Concerto Meta, the first three-way bookshelf speaker in the Q Series and revival of the classic KEF Concerto 1969. The new lineup also includes the first on-wall speaker in the Q Series range, the high performance Q4 Meta, which can be used as an LCR (left, center, right) or surround speaker. The Q6 Meta can also be used in an LCR configuration, featuring the same Uni-Q driver as the main speakers.

The Q8 Meta can be placed upon another main speaker for Dolby Atmos height channels to bounce sound off the ceiling, bringing immersive audio to the room effortlessly, as well as serve as a surround-sound speaker with its integrated wall mount feature. Whether installed in a spacious living room or a cosy corner, the diversity of form factors and capabilities within the Q Series allows any setup to suit space and listening preferences. The series can also be paired with KEF subwoofers.

All Q Series MAT speakers feature a contemporary minimalist design with a satin finish that offers a premium, subtle glow. Available in Satin Black, Satin White, and Walnut finishes with carefully selected color driver units, they are designed to blend effortlessly into any interior. Dedicated grilles are included with the speakers, providing the option to protect the drivers if needed. These color-matched grilles maintain the cohesive aesthetic, while the magnetic fixing provides a secure and precise fit, in keeping with the clean and seamless styling of the Q Series.

Availability of the Q Concerto Meta starts now, with Q11 Meta, Q7 Meta, Q3 Meta, Q1 Meta, Q6 Meta, and Q8 Meta models available from October 10, and Q4 Meta plus specific accessories available later in 2024. Prices range from USD $600 for a pair of Q1 Meta speakers, $1300 for a pair of Q Concerto Meta, all the way to $2,200 for a pair of Q11 Meta three-way bass reflex floor-standing speakers.
