G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration Releases Improved and Easy-to-Use Sound Calibrator that Calibrates at Two Frequencies and Levels

G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration announced the availability of the new, cost effective, and easy-to-use 42AG Multifunction Sound Calibrator. This new portable device, which can calibrate at two frequencies, was designed for fast verification of microphones and sound level meters in the field and was developed as an improved replacement for G.R.A.S.’s successful 42AB Sound Calibrator, with additional time-saving features.

According to the renowned Danish manufacturer of high-quality measurement microphones and related acoustic equipment, the 42AG Multifunction Sound Calibrator is able to calibrate at 250 Hz or 1 kHz frequencies, and at two different sound pressure levels, 94 dB or 114 dB. This replaces the 42AB which produced a constant nominal sound pressure level of 114 dB at 1 kH. It also makes the 42AG much better suited for calibration of sound level meters, which normally are calibrated at 1 kHz, while allowing for correct calibration of microphones, which normally are calibrated at 250 Hz. The normal level of 114 dB is suitable for microphones with medium sensitivity, while the low level of 94 dB makes it possible to calibrate high-sensitivity microphones, like low-noise microphones, without overload.

The 42AG Multifunction Sound Calibrator is battery powered and was designed specifically for portable, in-the-field use, featuring an easy-to-use OLED display. For documentation purposes, the 42AG can display environmental conditions including ambient air pressure and temperature, offering a complete functional and practical all-in-box solution, with proven stability.

According to G.R.A.S. product manager Jan Hansen, the 42AG is the perfect upgrade from existing calibrators. “The 42AG represents new and improved functionality and ease of use. There is a real need for a portable and user-friendly calibrator that can be used for testing in multiple situations. The combination of portability, automatic level adjustment, and two calibration frequencies and levels makes the 42AG a complete, reliable and self-sufficient solution that can be used to perform complete field-verifications without the need for other instrumentation, e.g. for recording ambient calibration conditions.”

The calibration level, frequency and environmental parameters are displayed on a high contrast OLED display. Selecting the dB button toggles between 94 and 114 dB. Likewise, a push on the Hz button toggles between 1000 and 250 Hz. The °C/°F button displays the ambient pressure, temperature and humidity.

The 42AG Multifunction Sound Calibrator has been designed to serve 1” and smaller microphones and sound level meters equipped with these microphones. One inch microphones fit directly in the calibrator coupler, while 1/2”, 1/4” and 1/8” microphones require adapters that are supplied with the calibrator.
