Focal Expands Alpha Evo Line with Two Active Studio Monitors and Subwoofer

February 3 2022, 00:30
Another new studio-oriented announcement that was slated for presentation at the Winter NAMM Show 2022 - this year postponed to June - the new Focal Alpha Evo studio monitor line has gained three new models. Evo stands for “evolution,” and the Alpha 50 Evo and Alpha 65 Evo studio monitors were launched in 2021, offering a high performance, robust design, at a competitive price point range. Now, Focal completed the line with new Alpha 80 Evo and Alpha Twin Evo monitors, and added the Sub One subwoofer.

With the Alpha Evo line, Focal intends to meet the needs of professionals looking for a high volume monitor solution with a rich infrasound extension. According to the French manufacturer, these monitors stand out for their Slatefiber cone - made by Focal in France from recycled carbon-fiber - and front sided laminar ports. All models also benefit from latest Class D amplification modules, delivering full signal dynamics at lower and very high volumes, while keeping distortion at record low levels. A combination that delivers the essential components for reference monitoring, revealing the critical details in the mix, across all musical styles.

To offer maximum flexibility in multiple environments, all Focal Alpha Evo monitors feature a new 1/4" (6.35mm) TRS jack input - in addition to the XLR and RCA analog inputs - and automatic stand-by mode (with bypass). Users are able to connect up to 3 audio sources if they wish. All cabinets are built from 5/8" (15mm) thick MDF with structural internal braces to ensure they are able to withstand the highest levels of acoustic pressure. Multiple installation options include inserts for wall mount. The bass-reflex designs with rounded contours also help ensure easy acoustic integration. Removable protective grills for each driver are also included.

Currently the largest 2-way nearfield design in the range, the new Focal Alpha 80 Evo was designed for professionals seeking high volumes and a rich sub-bass extension. The monitor features a 1" (25mm) aluminum inverted dome tweeter combined with an  8" (20cm) Slatefiber cone woofer, with a large laminar front vent. This design is responsible for the monitor's extended dynamics and wide dispersion, enabling the same sound to be maintained throughout the entire room, with identical tonal balance at both low and high volumes.

Next in the range is the Focal Alpha Twin Evo, an active 2.5-way configuration designed for excellent dynamics, neutrality in the tonal balance and wide, coherent dispersion, delivering the same sound signature across a wide sweet spot. The design combines the same 1" (25mm) aluminum inverted dome tweeter with two 6.5" (16.5cm) woofers with Slatefiber cones.

The Focal Alpha Twin Evo is designed as a unique 2.5-way to be positioned horizontally where the users can choose which speaker driver will produce the midrange frequencies, using a switch located on the rear plate. This makes it an extremely versatile studio monitor solution that will meet the needs of producers seeking high volumes and sub-bass extension. According to Focal, the Alpha Twin Evo monitors are also perfectly suited for film score composers who need a high level of precision across the full spectrum.

To complete its range of studio monitors, Focal Professional now also added the Sub One, a dedicated active 200W RMS subwoofer which the French company touts as "a testament" to its "spirit of innovation." Designed for extremely low distortion, the Focal Sub One provides an ideal partner for the Alpha Evo and Shape studio monitor lines. The cabinet, finished with a very neutral dark grey vinyl material, is equipped with two 8" (20cm) double-skinned Slatefiber long-excursion woofers that use two aligned cones for greater rigidity, complemented with two large front-firing ports.

For producers and sound engineers with higher demands in the sub-bass (32Hz to 120Hz), Focal designed the Sub One as a precision extension with very low distortion and high-efficiency. The subwoofer can be easily and discreetly positioned along a wall or under a desktop as it takes up less depth. The connection panel offers LFE, left and right inputs, and left and right outputs, with 2.1 low frequency management, fully adjustable low-pass crossover, volume, and phase, plus polarity switch. There is also a footswitch input and Mute with linking between several subwoofers.

The three new Focal Professional products are available now for orders through retailers in the US and Canada, and have suggested retail prices of $549 USD for the Alpha 80 Evo (unit), $659 USD for the Alpha Twin Evo (unit), and $999. USD for the Sub One.
