With market demand for encoder/decoder solutions on the rise, ESS Technology introduced a new SABRE CODEC that integrates its newest generation high performance stereo analog and digital channels in a single chip. The new ESS ES9290 is a synchronous CODEC incorporating both stereo ADCs and DACs that provide ultra-low noise conversion with a dynamic range (DNR) of +116dB/+116dB, and with THD+N rated at -108dB/-110dB (ADC/DAC respectively) per channel.

The new ESS SABRE ES9290 is a synchronous stereo analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) CODEC targeted for professional audio interfaces, live stream media, high-quality microphones, and professional DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) audio recording. It is a cost-effective solution that has stereo ADCs and DACs which use ESS’ patented Hyperstream IV Architecture, delivering superior audio sound quality and specifications, including a DNR of +116dB and a THD+N of -108dB/-110dB (ADC/DAC) per channel.

A direct monitoring path is also provided with very low latency, and the ES9290 features built-in programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) with a gain of up to +30dB, 2Vrms Line Driver Buffers, custom pre-programmed filters, analog phase locked loop (APLL), and a Digital Full Biquad (DBQ) filter with many presets and custom filters. This simplifies designs with lower cost and BOM requirements while enabling very high performance, providing front-end and back-end circuits for gain and output levels.

Fully customizable filters include many preset options such as 80Hz/120Hz high pass, RIAA de-emphasis and pre-emphasis filters. There is also a programmable microphone (MIC)BIAS for analog microphone support, internal/external clock sync setting to the TDM interface, ADC and DAC mixing, independent wide digital volume control including up to +42dB of digital gain, as well as digital and analog Low Noise Regulators to maximize DAC and ADC performance.

An incorporated Direct Monitoring mode will allow to listen to the analog input signal with very low latency through the direct path from the ADC/PGA to the DAC/line driver interface while having the ability to record the input signal. Direct Monitoring for the ES9290 is less than 10 samples.

The ESS patented Hyperstream IV architecture incorporated in the ES9290 provides the renowned SABRE sound quality which further improves audio performance while consuming lower power compared to previous generations.

The ES9290 supports multiple I/O formats including TDM, TDM Daisy Chain, I2S, LJ, RJ while supporting up to 768kHz sample rate using 64FS mode. The control interface can be programmed using multiple input methods including I2C, SPI, and a hardware mode (HW) for ease of programmability.

"ESS has been the highest performance and market leader on DACs and ADCs. We’ve combined them in the best of class performance stereo CODEC with the lowest BOM and ease of use features for audio system designers," says Robert Wong VP of ESS Worldwide Sales and Marketing.

The ES9290 is available in a 40 pin 5mm x 5mm QFN package. Evaluation boards, reference designs, and samples are available.
