Dolby Laboratories Introduces Dolby.io Platform for Developers

May 14 2020, 01:10
Dolby Laboratories announced Dolby.io, an API platform that gives developers access to APIs designed to improve the quality of the media and communications within their applications. According to Dolby, the platform offers tools to enhance every interaction and quality of content in new apps and services. The interactivity APIs focus on real-time voice and video collaboration, and the Media Processing APIs focus on audio/video content enhancement and analysis.

Since its founding, Dolby has been on a mission to empower creativity, driven by a belief that people are moved and compelled by immersive experiences. This has led to some of the world’s greatest creatives, storytellers, device manufacturers, and content distributors using Dolby experiences to transform the many ways people enjoy entertainment. However, businesses and developers outside of the music and entertainment industries often lack the resources and experience to integrate Dolby's technologies. Dolby.io intends to change that through a collection of scalable, easy-to-use interactivity and media processing APIs.

“Media not only shapes and defines our experiences, it keeps us connected to each other,” says Aaron Liao, Vice President, Developer Relations, Dolby. “With Dolby.io, developers can now take the magic Dolby has instilled into billions of devices, thousands of films, billions of conference call minutes, and use it to fuel nearly any real-time interaction or piece of content – all at an accessible and transparent cost, designed to inspire iteration and creativity. The future of experiential media never looked or sounded better.”

The initially available APIs can analyze and enhance the quality of media content or enable multi-party audio and video communications to be embedded within an app. Dolby.io will also enable developers to bring Dolby experiences to new industries such as healthcare, distance learning, digital collaboration, online training, podcasting, and social media.

The core offerings of Dolby.io include interactivity and media processing APIs. Businesses and developers building communications and collaboration into their apps want control over quality and engagement that third-party services often cannot provide. With Dolby.io’s new interactivity APIs, developers can build everything people need to communicate and collaborate, with powerful cross-platform tools such as Spatial Audio, advanced noise reduction, HD Video, broadcasting and screen-sharing.

"With the power of Dolby Voice, we can deliver spectacular communications experiences with solutions for noise suppression, audio correction, and spatial capabilities that are a significant improvement over what can be found in other real-time communications platforms," adds Liao.

With the media processing APIs, developers and businesses can now analyze and enhance all their media cost-effectively to do things like reduce background noise and improve dialog levels to increase intelligibility and engagement, in addition to providing quality metrics, audio analytics, and deeper content insights. Audio processing APIs offer adaptive noise reduction, loudness leveling, equalization, and dialog enhancement.

"The SDKs are built for developers to create their own web and native mobile applications. You can use these SDKs to have near-complete control over the look-and-feel, the connection flow, and in-call functionality without worrying about the underlying voice and video components. We have provided a User Experience Toolkit (UXKit) that allows you to get a complete experience out of the box more quickly. With UXKit the audio / video connections, icons, and user interactivity has been implemented already to help you go from idea to done more quickly."

Dolby.io features a free trial for new users that includes 30,000 interactivity minutes and 200 media processing minutes. Beyond the free trial, interactivity APIs will cost $0.0045 per participant, per minute, and media processing APIs will cost $0.05 per minute.
