DJI Introduces DJI Mic Wireless Audio Recording System

April 8 2022, 01:10
Chinese company DJI is globally recognized as a leading manufacturer of consumer and professional drones as well as content production solutions, from action cameras to stabilization systems, always leveraging robotics and fully automated solutions. Now, the company introduced DJI Mic, a dual channel wireless microphone system that is also its first dedicated audio recording product. It looks extremely professional, it's portable and compact, and offers robust transmission at large distances with backup built-in recording.

DJI Mic is a dual wireless microphone system solution for recording audio at considerable distances that standard Bluetooth doesn't cover. With 5.5-hours of battery life on each transmitter/microphone and a total of 15 hours within the charging case, DJI Mic was designed for shooting smartphone videos, interviews, or to be used in field reporting and content creation that requires high-quality audio. Leveraging the latest true wireless technology, the system consists of two omnidirectional microphone transmitters, a receiver, and an ultra-compact charging case that fits easily into a pocket. It was designed to be totally compatible with smartphones, cameras, and brand's own smart stabilization systems DJI OM 5 and DJI Action 2 cameras.

As already stated, this is not like other Bluetooth or short range wireless transmitters working on 2.4GHz. DJI Mic is a complete dual-channel recording system using encryption technology that is able to transmit a robust audio signal at a distance of up to 250 meters, in an obstruction-free outdoor environment. It uses a standard Gaussian frequency-shift keying (GFSK) modulation scheme (same as DECT or Bluetooth) to transmission a proprietary protocol at 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps, in the same 2400-2483.5 MHz operating band as other technologies.

When connected, the receiver records the signal in a 24-bit mono WAV audio format (48kHZ) to the destination device - smartphone camera, etc. When the receiver is connected to the two transmitters, the user can choose to record the two different audio sources simultaneously (S Mode - left and right channels) or record both channels to mono (M Mode), o having a mono signal and another one as backup channel in Safety Mode (Ms).

The 3.5mm jack port on the DJI Mic receiver allows users to monitor the signals being recorded and adjust monitoring volume. Transmission latency from the transmitters is around 15ms. The transmitters and receiver both boast a 5.5-hour battery life and a total of 15 hours with the compact charging case.

As with all DJI designs, the DJI Mic system is easy to setup. The user just needs to remove the two transmitter/microphones from the portable charging case that stores the transmitters and receiver and fast-pairs the system just by opening it. The transmitters attach via back-clip or magnetic plate, and the receiver's built-in touchscreen gives easy access to channel selection, input/output settings, and other essential operations. Weighing just 30 grams, each transmitter easily clips onto a shirt collar.

Each transmitter has built-in storage of up to 14 hours (8GB) and supports backup recording, ensuring that audio files are safe and easy to access. This means that even if there is interference in the transmission during the recording, the transmitter will hold the source audio undamaged. Files can be transferred via the USB Type-C Cable and the units appear as a drive when connected to any PC or Mac. The DJI Mic receiver supports USB-C, Lightning, and 3.5mm TRS interface output, making it compatible with most smartphone, camera, and laptop models.

The system offers flexible variable gain control from the two independent audio sources. The mentioned Safety Track is a secondary mono audio track recorded as a backup with a lower volume of -6 dB than the main track, which helps to safeguard against unforeseen issues. Users can also adjust input and output sensitivity between -12dB ~ 12dB and find the perfect setting for each environment and intended sources.

A microphone furry windscreen effectively suppresses wind and noisy environments. Everything is included in the box, including camera cable, connector adaptors, charging cable, windscreens, magnetic plate and carrying bag, retailing for $329 USD.

Headquartered in Shenzhen, DJI benefits from direct access to suppliers, raw materials, and a young, creative talent pool. The privately owned and operated company maintains offices in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
