Devialet Unveils Devialet Gemini True Wireless Earbuds with ANC

October 12 2020, 00:35
It's official! After the Devialet ADH amplifiers and connected Phantom speakers, the French company operating at the intersection of luxury and cutting edge technology, now unveiled its first true wireless earbuds. The Devialet Gemini mark also the company's entry in the portable product category, with a top IPX4 design, built to last, and offering superior sound. And working in direct cooperation with Qualcomm, Devialet was able to build upon a Bluetooth 5.0 solution with Active Noise Cancelling, by adding unique proprietary technologies.

Devialet's first true wireless earbuds, the Devialet Gemini, are now available for pre-order (US$ 299) and are expected to ship before the end of 2020. For Devialet’s engineers this was an important challenge, to bring the company’s first-class design into a portable product, reflecting its signature sound and first-rate audio technologies.

"At Devialet, we create extraordinary products that deliver an unprecedented sound experience. We’ve pursued our goal of redefining the place of sound in people’s lives through our amplifiers and speakers, and Devialet Gemini - our first portable product - brings us closer to our goal," says Franck Lebouchard, Devialet’s CEO.

The new earbuds, will combine top quality sound with cutting-edge adaptability and market-leading Active Noise Cancelling (ANC). For the Devialet Gemini wireless earbuds to deliver a pristine audio performance, in line with other products that have projected the company as a leading acoustic engineering house, Devialet's engineers have developed a set of unique technologies that are protected by three new patents: PBA for Pressure Balance Architecture, IDC for Internal Delay Compensation, and EAM for Ear Active Matching. All aiming to guarantee an uncompromising sound quality.

Devialet’s Pressure Balance Architecture (PBA) provides playback with that superior sound quality by cascading decompression chambers inside the earbuds to ensure the ideal inner pressure at all times, without impairing noise attenuation. Each chamber is coated with a custom acoustic mesh to prevent external noise
from entering the system.

Two separate microphones in each earbud enhance the signal and ANC, while one dedicated microphone in each earbud enhances voice transmission. High excursion 10mm Devialet drivers offer sensitivity and low distortion for better audio rendering.

As Devialet explains, all those technologies and design features also combine to enhance a best-in-class ANC experience in the Devialet Gemini earbuds. Devialet Gemini’s custom Internal Delay Compensation (IDC) compensates precisely for the internal delay generated by a noise cancellation loop, resulting in a significant gain in noise cancellation, especially at higher frequencies.

With 3 levels of ANC and 2 levels of transparency, and using specific digital filters, the Devialet Gemini earbuds offer ANC modes that continually remove background noise - from invasive outside distractions to unwanted bass or treble frequencies - and offer users the space they need to focus on listening, working, or talking. Transparency modes give users the option to hear the environment while simultaneously listening to music. And these modes offer a complete hear-through experience, with both microphones working in sync to efficiently transmit external sound. All at the touch of a button.

"Our award-winning team of Hardware, Software and Signal Processing Engineers has worked tirelessly to create a product centered around pristine audio performance, best-in-class ANC, and adaptability to suit any listener," adds Ken McAlpine, Devialet’s CTO.
In an effort to differentiate a product that fundamentally depends upon a series of common technologies and platforms that are available to any manufacturer, Devialet’s acoustic engineers  developed further solutions for the new design. One of those solutions is the proprietary Ear Active Matching (EAM) technology that delivers enhanced signal transmission by adjusting audio signal frequency ranges in real-time, intelligently adapting the earbuds’s sound for an optimal listening experience.

As the French company details, the EAM algorithm measures the shape of the listener’s ear as well as the position of the earphones inside the ear canal, tailoring the signal up to 10,000 times per second to instantly adapt its equalization, enhancing bass restitution and audio performance seamlessly.

And the Devialet Gemini earbuds have been carefully and ergonomically designed to fit every ear shape. The earbuds can even leverage the sensors to help determine which tips are best suited to the user, in just five seconds via the app. Basically, a process of scanning the user's ears to find a perfect fit to ensure optimal playback and minimize acoustic leakage. And the Gemini earbuds come with four separate flexible earbud options (XS, S, M, L), in order to suit every listener.

The dedicated Devialet Gemini app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, combines ease-of-use with expert features for a tailored sound. Users can further personalize their sound using a 6-band equalizer, while an all-in-one touch button at the surface of the earbuds controls everything from music playback to noise cancelling modes and voice assistant (Siri, Google Assistant) support.

Carefully balancing form with function, the Devialet Gemini’s refined and compact design echoes the precision of the sophisticated technologies inside while still standing out from the crowd in a distinctive, sleek, matte black design that extends to the charging case.

Visually linked to Devialet’s iconic Phantom series of all-in-one speakers, the Devialet Gemini mirror the signature design of Phantom’s side panels and the speaker’s unique shape. The Devialet Gemini’s "jewel box" charging case boasts soft textured surfacing and a slider that reveals the earbuds with a luxurious touch. The case provides over 24 hours of untethered playtime, with over 6 hours of battery life with ANC activated in every charge. The case also supports wireless Qi charging or via the included USB-C cable.

Otherwise, the earbuds offer a level of specifications that users have come to expect, with IPX4 rated earbuds to guarantee resistance to dust and water splashes from any direction, support for AAC and Qualcomm aptX codecs, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity to support easy pairing with any Bluetooth devices. In another attempt to differentiate given the top price, Devialet pitches that users will be able to replace the charging case battery, buy spare parts, or even new left and right earbuds individually, all via the Devialet website.
