Augspurger MinimaX Nearfield Monitors Launched at Summer NAMM 2021

Augspurger, the studio monitor company founded by Dave Malekpour, announced a new 2-way near-field monitoring solution, the MX-65 ‘MinimaX’. Featuring many of the same high-end features as seen in its existing SOLO and DUO monitor series, the MX-series brings the renowned Augspurger sound principles and immersive capabilities to new audiences in a compact and portable package. Studio equipment specialist Pro Audio Design will show the new monitors at Summer NAMM 2021.

In 1999, Unique Recording, a well known New York studio, contacted Boston-based pro audio systems consultant Dave Malekpour looking for a new main monitor system. The studio needed something that could handle the extreme playback levels desired by urban artists, while also providing an accurate and inspiring sound stage for the engineer and producer to work with. This led to the first Augspurger system to be built and installed by Malekpour, designed by George Augspurger himself.

George Augspurger designed legendary studios in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and remains known for his custom monitors, around which the rest of the studio was designed. Dave found the sound of the speakers to be surprisingly open and articulate, while also seeing opportunity to improve the sound and consistency of them through further engineering. In 2012, Dave Malekpour launched Augspurger Monitors as a manufacturing company, focusing on studio reference main and mid-field monitors. Since then, Malekpour and his team have built and installed hundreds of pairs of Augspurger-based monitors. George Augspurger continued to work on studio design independently.

Today’s range of fully-active, DSP driven “smart” monitors are based on Augspurgers original designs, as well as newly-innovated products that address the expanding needs of studio owners. They can be found in top studios in NYC LA and Miami, including Jungle City, Quad Studios, Hit Factory, Sony, MSR Recording, Dave Pensado’s FabFactory, Rafa Sardina’s Afterhours and many others.

The first in a new MX-series from Augspurger, MinimaX is built-in mirror-image pairs allowing for a wide variety of placement and applications. They can be positioned either horizontally or vertically thanks to the unique and rotatable solid maple horn (patent-pending) which operates across more than an impressive four octaves – perfect for classic audio recording and post-production rooms.

Dave Malekpour thinks the new MinimaX design will suit a vast array of listening environments, and bring theatrical dynamics and precise details into a wide variety of spaces. With Atmos-enabled facilities on the rise, the new MX-series meets the needs of those environments, delivering an accurate sonic experience by delivering 70x110 degree dispersion for extremely controlled, highly accurate directivity of the sound.

Equally at home on a console or desktop, the MinimaX monitors have been designed to provide a main monitor experience in a nearfield position for tracking and mixing, and is expandable to a full-range 3-way system with the addition of Augspurger subwoofers. The monitor boasts a 99.97% pure beryllium diaphragm, a signature feature carried through the entire Augspurger product line.

The DSP inside MinimaX’s onboard SXE Series amplifiers is accessed via Augspurger’s own DSPtunesoftware (available for MacOS and Windows), providing complete setup and control of all parameters, including crossover, phase, group delay, limiting, and EQ to personally and perfectly tune MinimaX to the working and listening environment – so traveling engineers and artists can benefit from MX-series portability, without compromise.

The MinimaX enclosures come in a variety of colors and finishes and can be positioned vertically or horizontally, on stands or wall-mounted. The MX-series MinimaX makes its debut with the MX-65, shipping in Q4 2021 and selling for $10,995 USD for a pair, including Augspurger SXE Series amplification, exclusively from Pro Audio Design (US only).
