Audio Engineering Society Announces New Task Group for UWB Hi Res, Low Latency Audio Interface

October 11 2023, 14:10
In response to growing industry interest and activities around Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for audio applications, the Audio Engineering Society announced the creation of a new Task Group to develop a new standard for UWB high resolution low latency audio interface. The new AES Standards group is called SC-02-02-B and is under the Working Group on Digital Audio Interfacing chaired by John Grant, and chaired by Jackie Green, Technical Advisor for the UWB Alliance.

According to the AES Standards blog, the new effort will describe the preferred way to implement connection management, assure consistent audio quality, and provide for interoperable audio and feature control sets for the MAC convergence and application layers of UWB devices intended for high-quality audio use.

The Task Group will also work to provide extensions to IEEE 802.15.4ab standard which defines connection, operating features and command structure in order to provide an interoperable interface between UWB audio capture and playback devices.

All persons interested in participating in this effort should sign up on the AES Standards website or contact the Standards Manager. "I'm happy to be able to chair this important standards task group for high quality low latency audio using UWB! Check it out. You don't have to be an AES member to join standards groups - but if you're interested in audio it's a good idea to be/become a member anyway," invites Jackie Green.

The work of this standards group is directly related to the UWB Alliance activity, where Jackie Green is directly involved. The UWB Alliance supports many different UWB chip manufacturers, implementors, manufacturers, users, etc. Green is currently also VP of Engineering for Subpac, the tactile audio company that created low frequency monitoring solutions for gaming, audio production, and automotive applications; and a director of Nexonic LLC, a technology consulting firm formed to capitalize on years of experience delivering innovative solutions for RF, digital, and audio products and projects.

Previously, she was the President and Chief Technology Officer of the technology spin-off company Alteros, created to develop professional wireless audio systems based on UWB and promote the technology's superior wireless performance. This effort originated from Audio-Technica, where Jackie Green served for 30 years as R&D/Engineering Vice President at Audio-Technica US.
