The original CRMS-SRHV compact surround speakers were actually presented with great impact at CEDIA Expo 2019, where the Pro-Ribbon Immersive Experience was again an highlight. The cinema auditorium featured an Alcons 9.x.6 sound system with a Sony VPL-VW5000ES 4K home theater projector, DreamScreen UltraWeave V6 screen, and a StormAudio ISP 3D.32 Elite immersive processor. The audio system consisted of LCR screen channels of three Alcons CRMS mkll, four CRMSC-LFE18 as screen subs, a surround base level comprising six CRMSC-SRHV90 and a surround height level of six CRMSC-SRHV120 - all powered by six Sentinel10 amplified loudspeaker controllers.
The CRMS-SRHV surround is a larger 2-way passive-filtered loudspeaker, designed for immersive surround sound formats and of course featuring the patented Alcons pro-ribbon driver technology. Offering increased clarity and intelligibility with an unusually high dynamic range, for a very realistic sound reproduction, the CRMS-SRHV benefits overall from the “compression-less” principle of the pro-ribbon transducer, delivering a linear response within its operational SPL.
The CRMS-SRHV system consists of the RBN401 pro-ribbon driver for HF and a vented 8" mid-bass for LF reproduction. The CRMS-SRHV/9090 HF section has an 800 W peak power input, enabling a 1:15 dynamic range with up to 90% less distortion from 1 kHz to beyond 20 kHz.
The patented (90-degrees) horizontal and patent-pending (90-degrees) vertical dispersion offers a very wide and consistent coverage up to the highest frequencies. By utilizing identical MHF components, a perfect voicing matching between screen- and surround system is realized, resulting in an exceptionally wide and uniform sound stage throughout the entire listening area.
The trapezoidal enclosure together with the optional grill and ACO color option, provides for easy, low profile wall or ceiling mounting. Typical applications include (height layer) immersive surround sound systems for performing arts theaters, screening rooms, post-production facilities and dubbing stages, premium Home Cinemas and quality-conscious PLF cinemas.
For full system performance, the CRMS-SRHV needs to be driven by Alcons own ALC controller-amplifier, delivering maximum sound quality with increased headroom and operation reliability. The system is available in 8 ohms and 4 ohms version, for maximum amplifier efficiency in individually-amplified immersive surround systems.
The Signal Integrity Sensing pre-wiring ensures complete cable/connector compensation between the CRMS-SRHV and the ALC unit, significantly increasing response accuracy, regardless of cable length and system impedance.
“The CRMS range is our separate group of solutions for the studio and residential markets. Following our compact immersive systems, with CRMS-SRHV, we now also have the versatile height or width channel solution for the larger studios, theaters and screening rooms,” says Philip “Dr. Phil” De Haan, head of Alcons R&D. “As we continue to upscale the possibilities of our patent-pending waveguide technology, we have optimized the 4" RBN401 to bring the wide 90° x 90° dispersion into the CRMS range, while using the exact same transducers for a perfect voicing-match throughout the CRMS family.”
QB242 Arrayable Subwoofer
The new QB242 is a modular bass element to be used in both permanent and (limited) portable applications. It is designed as a fully-scalable low-frequency extension (LFE) system to the QR24 line-source column system, or as arrayable LFE system with any Alcons pro-ribbon system.
The QB242 can be stacked or flown in multiples, making it an ideal building block to form bass arrays, for obtaining low frequency projection and throw control in acoustically challenging spaces or over longer distances. The controlled (cylindrical) projection of the QR24 can thus be extended down to the lower frequencies by enlarging the LFE array length through adding extra QB242 modules. The lowest usable frequency of one single element is 35Hz.
Alcons' Q-systems are a perfect tool in applications where a high directivity and/or a very long throw is required, combined with hi-fidelity output and concert SPL’s, like in theaters, churches, Houses of Worship, and “acoustically challenging rooms.”
The two direct-radiating 12" Neodymium woofers are mounted in a vented chamber, with large bass reflex ports for excellent breathing capacity, increasing overall output while minimizing port-compression. The tight driver arrangement caters for optimal array coupling. The 8 ohms system impedance, makes for a very efficient amplifier channel loading, when assembling arrays of multiple units. The integrated mounting hardware also facilitates quick and easy coupling with other QB242 modules.
The QB242 is powered and controlled by Alcons' ALC amplified loudspeaker controller. Through the integrated processing and feedback, the ALC offers QB242-specific drive processing with optimal response and long-term reliability. The integrated factory presets in the ALC offer the latest VHIR processing, with gain, phase and filtering matching with all Alcons top systems. Through the Signal Integrity Sensing (SIS) pre-wiring, the cable-length and connector resistance between the QB242 and ALC is dynamically compensated (system damping factor 10.000), further reducing distortion, while increasing response accuracy.
The QB242 is finished in Durotect coating and comes with a 6 years “no-hassle” warranty.
“Our Q-series is the purest form of a line-source array, where we are able to acoustically obtain a pure, virtually side-lobe-free cylindrical projection, without the need for DSP-based beamforming. To complete the frequency response of the QR and QM modules down to the lower octaves, Alcons Audio introduced the QB module. The Q-series is probably our most underestimated system, as listeners are always surprised by the phenomenal throw and razorsharp vertical directivity control of even a single QR element; And to experience a coherent QB array of 12m/39-ft tall in one of our reference projects is quite impressive!”, adds Phil de Haan.
