French sound reinforcement specialist NEXO (a business unit of Yamaha Corp since 2008) continues to surprise the market with new loudspeaker designs paying extreme attention to detail. Introduced during the Prolight+Sound 2015 show in Frankfurt, the new ID Series is available in install, touring and “a la carte” configurations.The Frankfurt Prolight+Sound show provided the first opportunity to see NEXO’s brand-new family of low-profile high-output loudspeakers, aimed primarily at the installation and commercial audio market. The new ID Series promises class-leading power and performance combined with an unprecedented level of versatility, making it suitable for a huge variety of install and touring applications.
According to NEXO, ID stands for InSpace Definition and describes a new category of products, which are intended as problem-solvers for the toolkits of system designers and installers in all areas of the audio business. The physical characteristics of the ID Series of loudspeaker cabinets are super-compact and low profile, to enable their use in awkward and acoustically challenging spaces.
Using a variety of mounting options, the ID24 compact cabinet can fit into almost any environment, whilst its ability to offer high SPL output with variable directivity enables it to ‘beam’ sound into difficult spaces. According to NEXO, key targets for the new system are also the theatre and conferencing sector, where the ID Series completes the NEXO range by providing the under-balcony models to complement the brand’s main PA products.
At launch, the ID Series is comprised of three distinct products. The ID24 full-range compact speaker uses twin 4” drivers in a V formation in combination with an HF compression driver offering two preset directivity options. The LF driver combines two Neodymium shielded long excursion 8 Ω drivers, while the HF section uses a 1” voice coil 1/2” throat Neodymium compression 16 Ω driver. Complementing the ID24 are two low-profile powerful subs, ID S110 (1x10”) and ID S210 (2x10”), which can be installed discretely in a wide range of locations.
However, the unique design of the ID24 offers the user so many possibilities for tailored specification that NEXO has designated 3 versions: ID24i for installation, ID24t for touring and AV applications, and ID24c or the “a la carte” version which allows the customer to custom-configure the speaker to match precise requirements.
The ID24 has a unique user-adjustable horn, which can be rotated easily without the need for tools by a switch on the rear panel to give 60 or 120 degree HF coverage with the standard horn fitted. This allows the HF horizontal dispersion to be ‘tuned’ for the given application – installed or touring. As the ID24 can be mounted vertically or horizontally, this effectively gives the user four different directivity options in each cabinet.
The ID24i, tailored to the fixed installation environment with its termination in captive cable for fast, secure connectivity with existing wiring, is available in Black or White with a matching fabric grille. It comes with threaded holes for compatibility with NEXO and popular third-party mounting hardware. It is all-weather IP55 rated.
The unusual asymmetric shape of the ID24 cabinet further maximizes its possibilities. The module can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and, using the correct accessories, can be deployed as an under-balcony reinforcement module. In live performance situations, the ID24 can be pole-mounted or clipped onto a truss.
A purpose-designed accessory allows it to be precisely angled for stage front-fill applications. The ID24 can even be used as a wedge monitor, when stood upright in the horizontal plane.Unique to the ID24, the ‘carte’ version offers an unprecedented level of customization to match the loudspeaker to precise requirements, with four different directivity options, all of which are reversible by rotating the horn, different mounting options, different colors (black, white or any RAL color), Speakon connector or captive cable and different grille options in steel, fabric or foam.
The compact ID24 speakers are able to reach high outputs (124-126dB Peak SPL), which is certainly impressive for their size and price. Up to 16x ID24 cabinets can be powered by a single NXAMP4x1 amplifier, NEXO’s smallest powered TDController, which offers a host of features including ‘channel-by-channel’ preset selection and remote monitoring using the NeMo app. EtherSound and Dante network compatibility is available as an option.
