Kanex announced an optical audio solution for the new Apple TV, allowing to keep using existing hardware and have high quality audio support. The Digital Audio Adapter provides an optical audio port to connect a surround sound system to the 4th generation Apple TV via HDMI. The adapter supports 5.1 surround sound via standard optical audio, or 2.0 surround sound via 3.5mm audio port.
Kanex announced in fact two HDMI adapters for the 4th generation Apple TV, for anyone not interested in replacing current equipment and keep using existing hardware, still with high quality audio support. Surprisingly Kanex also introduced an HDMI to VGA Adapter to allow connecting an old VGA TV, monitor or projector with audio support. VGA, really? Anyone still using VGA these days??? Ah… schools, that’s right! The Digital Audio Adapter for new Apple TV is the truly interesting one, providing an optical audio port to connect a surround sound system to the 4th generation Apple TV.

As for the Kanex HDMI to VGA Adapter, Kanex says it is for those institutions still using VGA TV’s and projector, allowing users to connect an Apple TV and have audio on a 3.5mm jack for external speakers. With the Kanex adapter, AirPlay mirroring from an iPad can also be used with an existing (SD) projector.
