Better Headphones For a Good Cause

August 27 2015, 03:00

There are new headphones being introduced in the market practically everyday and, more surprisingly, start-ups designing new headphones. LIFE Acoustics founders decided to launch their LIFE headphones in a different way. Design a great new product and change the lives of deaf children living in poverty. We can support their initiative on Kickstarter.

Our upcoming October issue of audioXpress magazine features an interview with LIFE Acoustics founders Cooper Buss and Westin Bye in our Questions & Answers column. We interviewed the two entrepreneurs to find out about their fledgling company and learn why they placed their fate in the hands of Kickstarter investors. Buss and Bye set a $15,000 goal, and have received $16,115 pledged, thus far. The crowdfunding ends on Monday, September 7, 2015. The motto for LIFE Headphones is “Better Fit, Better Sound, Higher Purpose.”

It seems the founders are also philanthropists with a dual goal. They designed LIFE headphones for people who have active lifestyles and care about how their music sounds by combining an innovative, patented shape and top of the line audio components to give you the ultimate listening experience whether you are on a run, an airplane, or laying in bed.

But, they also have a “higher purpose” and have teamed with NGO Ayúdame a Escuchar (Help Me Hear) to change the lives of deaf children living in poverty by giving them solar powered hearing aids.

To achieve this vision, LIFE Acoustics founders asked audiologists to design LIFE headphones for people who have active lifestyles and care about how their music sounds. The result combines an innovative, patented shape and top of the line audio components to provide the ultimate listening experience on a run, an airplane, or laying in bed.

Using a patented design, shaped like the crevices in our ears, LIFE headphone anchors itself comfortably for long term active use. To hold the headphones in place the custom shaped cord works so that the earpiece is pulled forwards rather than out. The helix hooks around the tail of the earpiece and keeps it from twisting, while the ear canal holds the ear bud firmly and provides a good level of isolation.

The cord itself is made in the US by Plastics One, a company that produces cords for medical devices and it’s ultradurable with rugged connections, a dedicated Y split housing, twist-braided wires, and a right angle jack. At its end, LIFE’s cord is covered by Wireform casing which can be shaped to perfectly flow over and around the ear for comfortable fit.

The concept is that the LIFE headphone could almost replace the need for a custom earpiece while implementing sound technologies normally reserved for professional in-ear monitors. Each of the earpieces contains two balanced armature drivers, one dedicated and tuned as a tweeter and one as a woofer, with a crossover to separate the frequencies accordingly, working in perfect cohesion and without enhancing too much bass and provide accurate stereo imaging.

The standard LIFE Headphones package being promoted on Kickstarter ships with a compact, protective clamshell carrying case, molded silicone tips in three sizes, replaceable cord, a cleaning tool, instructions and warranty info.
