The latest low-power T5838 and T5837 digital PDM MEMS microphones, part of the TDK InvenSense SmartSound family, have been elected by Syntiant as a microphone of choice for low-power edge AI application processors that perform keyword detection, due to its innovative Acoustic Activity Detect (AAD) feature that enables system power savings, thus prolonging battery life, and ability to intelligently detect keywords or voice commands.
The TDK T5838 and T5837 PDM microphones offer 68dBA SNR while consuming only 130µA in always-on mode and 330µA in high-performance mode. Both models are particularly suitable for many IoT and edge AI applications including voice activated TV remote controls, window glass break detection for home security, augmented reality glasses, wearables, action cameras, smart speakers, and TWS earbuds. With an exceptional power efficiency and performance, the T5838 and T5837 microphones enable developers to integrate voice command functionalities and audio detection capabilities into their products.
The T5838 advanced Acoustic Activity Detect (AAD) feature intelligently screens for acoustic activity indicating keywords or voice commands, allowing the application’s processor to efficiently manage power consumption during idle periods. This enables IoT and edge AI devices to remain in an always-on state, ready to respond to user interactions, without draining the battery.
"The low power consumption and AAD functionalities of the T5838 microphone are essential to our customers who are deploying energy-efficient, high-performance edge AI solutions in speech recognition and acoustic event detection," states Kurt Busch, Syntiant's CEO. "Syntiant has closely collaborated with TDK to maximize the use of the T5838's AAD features with our Neural Decision Processors, aiming to deliver the most power-efficient solutions available in the market today," he further emphasizes.
Released at the Embedded World 2023 Exhibition and Conference, in Nuremberg, Germany, the RASynBoard development kit from Avnet (Nasdaq: AVT) can help hardware and software design engineers and embedded AI developers quickly adopt edge AI capabilities into their products. The development kit was created in collaboration with Renesas, Syntiant, TDK, and Edge Impulse, and targets both industrial and consumer applications needing battery powered, always-on, smart sensing capabilities, such as sound recognition, and voice command recognition. Its small (30mm x 25mm) size makes it ideal as an add-on sensor module for existing products, or its design can be customized and integrated in a larger system for enhanced sensing needs.
The RASynBoard module, or Core Board, comprises two domains: an always-on AI processor with on-board sensors and an MCU-based controller with a low-power WiFi/BT wireless module. The AI processing system has the ability to wake up the MCU controller when it detects an AI triggered "event," allowing the MCU system to take action or send notification through the wireless module and then return to the low-power AI sensing mode. Developers can customize both the sensors connected to the AI processor as well as the AI algorithm running on the AI processor.
The Syntiant NDP120 Neural Decision Processor is the AI processor used on RASynBoard and the Renesas RA6M4 MCU is the MCU controller. Also included on the Core Board is the Renesas DA16600 low-power WiFi/BT combo module, and two TDK sensors: the ICM-42670-P 6-axis IMU and the MMICT5838 PDM digital microphone.
"RASynBoard is a tiny, ultra-low power, edge AI/ML board that achieves highly efficient processing of acoustic- and motion events," explains Jim Beneke, VP, Advanced Applications Group, Avnet. "TDK’s innovative SmartSound performance solutions continue to represent disruptive and ground-breaking products that improve end user experience, empowering our customers and partners."
“The combination of Syntiant’s NDP120 neural processor and our T5838 digital PDM microphone enables always-on speech recognition and audio detection capabilities for edge IoT applications," adds Uday Mudoi, VP & GM – Microphone BU, InvenSense, a TDK group company. "The Avnet RASynBoard Kit with TDK's T5838 Microphone and ICM-4670 IMU will accelerate time to market for customers building smart edge systems."
