SEAS and Merry Electronics Announce the Launch of New SEAS Orbit Speaker Series

October 18 2022, 01:10
For many decades, manufacturers and speaker designers have learned to admire the quality, consistency and innovations coming from SEAS of Norway. Today, the speaker manufacturer is part of a much larger organization within Merry Electronics and the new SEAS Orbit Series features drivers developed in cooperation with the Taiwan-based company, aiming to address the requirements of OEMs looking for high-quality speakers for smart speakers, soundbars and videoconference systems.

SEAS Fabrikker has long been associated with the high-end audio market and very high-quality speaker drivers for some of the most demanding applications, but since its early days manufacturing speakers for radios, the Norwegian manufacturer always served a vast variety of applications for its OEM clients, including higher volume consumer products. Today, SEAS is an integral part of the Merry Transducer Business Unit (BU) with R&D teams both in the Norwegian town of Moss, in Norway, and Taichung, in Taiwan. The company provides high volume manufacturing in addition to its production facility in Moss, which is mainly focused on products intended for the high-end market.

To quickly recap, in 2014 SEAS Fabrikker was acquired by Sonavox Canada, a product design and development company, specializing in home and professional audio speakers and amplifiers. In 2017, Merry Electronics acquired 100% control of the Sonavox group, which is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of audio products and systems for the automotive industry. The new SEAS Orbit speaker series has been developed on that strong foundation of over half a century of engineering and manufacturing expertise, combining the core knowledge and competencies of both SEAS and Merry Electronics.

These are drivers that benefit highly from the extensive know-how of this integration, offering both advanced designs and the consistency required by higher volume manufacturing. Designed and developed especially for the most demanding videoconferencing and advanced smart-speaker products, the SEAS Orbit speakers are available for ordering in smaller sample quantities, and are available and specified for large scale mass production. Each driver is designed to offer the ultimate combination of quality, performance and value.

The SEAS Orbit series was launched with three small-size drivers, all full-range models with a recommended frequency range from 200Hz, offering two different base design proposals. All are designed to reduce distortion to a minimum, balancing the bass and treble, resulting in a distinct sound character and timbre. First is the OR002-04 FA6RBND/S, a 2" paper cone full range driver, followed by the OR004-04 FL6RBND/S, with an aluminum cone of the same size, and the OR003-04 FL4RCN/F 1.5" full-range driver, also an aluminum cone.

The SEAS Orbit FA6RBND/S features a paper cone and matched surround, 19.6mm voice coil with a fabric spider that reflects very little acoustic energy to the cone and offers superior stiffness linearity. A stiff and stable aluminum chassis keeps the critical components in perfect alignment, while the pole piece and copper cap ensure exceptional linearity in the force factor and coil inductance. The performance level achievable in this small size makes this driver a perfect choice for any application where limited space is a critical parameter.

The similar SEAS Orbit OR004-04 FL6RBND/S full-range offers an aluminium cone with matching surround alternative, achieving a slightly extended frequency response, using again a fabric spider, aluminium chassis and copper cap pole piece. Again, a driver that is ideal for any application with limited space. The second design in the SEAS Orbit series is the OR003-04 FL4RCN/F, another full-range driver in a smaller size, with a distinct aluminum cone and cap, fabric spider and stable plastic chassis.

According to CEO Olav Mellum Arntzen, SEAS is now making these first three drivers available to the market to show the results of this combined effort from SEAS and Merry Electronics, with further Orbit products to be announced before the end of 2022.
