Another week and another Pro-Ject turntable. Following the surprising XA B and the Debut PRO B, the Austrian manufacturer now announced the latest addition to the Debut Series, the Debut EVO 2. Advancing the design of its predecessor, the new Debut EVO 2 now uses the same tonearm bearing block and record platter as the just announced Debut PRO B. By moving away from the steel platter, it welcomes moving coil cartridges as one of many enhancements. The incorporation of the Pick it MM EVO phono cartridge and improved motor isolation are other highlights.
The new Pro-Ject Debut EVO 2 still features many favorite elements from the original Debut Carbon EVO turntable, including the 8.6" carbon-on-aluminum arm tube, low-friction precision tonearm bearings, a sophisticated DC/AC power generator, and height-adjustable metal feet.
Completely new in the Debut EVO 2 is the new pre-adjusted Pick it MM EVO cartridge, with a hearty 7mV output. Pro-Ject worked with the Danish cartridge experts at Ortofon to perfect the new moving magnet cartridge enabling a sonic signature that works harmoniously with the new turntable. The Debut EVO 2 also features a premium 8.6" carbon fiber armtube with a massive aluminum bearing block that draws resonance away from the cartridge. Pro-Ject was the first manufacturer to produce a carbon fiber tonearm for a turntable costing less than $1000, precisely in the original Debut Carbon. For the new model, the ABEC-7-rated main tonearm ball/race bearing guarantees a more stable and accurate tracking. The one-piece armtube/headshell design further prevents unwanted resonance and offers an ideal physical pairing with the Pick it MM EVO cartridge.
The tonearm pivot assembly in this Debut EVO 2 might look familiar. That is because it now uses the same bearing block as the recently announced Debut PRO B. The additional mass draws unwanted resonance away from the armtube and cartridge. It also provides a more stable anchor for the tonearm’s pivot, while the TPE-damped counterweight reduces resonance to an even greater degree.
The record platter in the new Debut EVO 2 comes courtesy of the recently announced Debut PRO B and XA B turntables. The 1.7kg (3.75 lbs) heavy platter is CNC-machined from aluminum and features an underside ridge filled with a thermoplastic elastomer to further eliminate any potential for unwanted resonance. This mutes any potential ‘ringing’ effect in the metal plate and adds rotational stability. The use of aluminum instead of steel makes way for any and all moving coil phono cartridges, eliminating the potential for magnetic interaction with the cartridge's magnet.
The new Debut EVO 2 turntable from Pro-Ject Audio Systems retails for $699, creating an accessible, upgraded turntable choice for any existing vinyl aficionados. Available in various colors and finishes – ranging from real-wood veneer to high gloss to satin – there’s an option available for everyone. And now Pro-Ject added a new satin red wine finish.
And following the recently launched True Balanced turntable designs, the new model is also balanced-capable by adding a moving coil cartridge (or Pro-Ject's Pick it PRO Balanced MM), an RCA > mini XLR cable, as well as any Pro-Ject phono preamp with a mini XLR input (Phono Box S3 B, Phono Box DS3 B, Tube Box DS3 B).
