Elliptic Labs, the Norwegian software sensor technology company, announced a collaboration with Cadence Design Systems to optimize its machine learning algorithms on Cadence Tensilica HiFi DSPs. Enabling Elliptic Labs to expand its software sensor user interfaces to more embedded systems, while simultaneously reducing power consumption for energy-critical applications, this collaboration benefits manufacturers in a wide range of markets, including mobile consumer devices, and automotive.
Elliptic Labs' AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform is an innovative software solution currently being deployed at scale in the mobile and IT markets (over 150 million devices to date), enabling new user experiences like presence detection, proximity detection and touchless gesture detection using a combination of AI software, ultrasound and sensor-fusion. In order to expand its technology to further products and manufacturers, the company needs to establish partnerships with the major processing and embedded platform players, in order to fully optimize the integration.
The Cadence Tensilica Xtensa Processor Platform is a complete configurable DSP, processor and AI platform that eases semiconductor companies' development of innovative and differentiated products and greatly reduces time to market. The Xtensa platform enables rapid architectural exploration, fully automated processor and software tool chain development, and domain-specific DSPs across a variety of market segments.
The Cadence HiFi DSP product line delivers the right combination of performance and low power for audio and AI applications, providing compelling acceleration for the Elliptic Labs' Virtual Sensor Platform in multiple consumer applications. Key innovative features like presence detection for advanced security can be enabled seamlessly with minimal impact to battery life.
"Bringing Elliptic Labs and Cadence together rapidly expands the reach of the AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform across multiple markets," shares Laila Danielsen, CEO of Elliptic Labs. "The largest OEMs in the world rely on Cadence to provide powerful, energy-efficient processors to drive next-generation devices. Elliptic’s collaboration with Cadence for Tensilica HiFi DSPs is a natural and obvious partnership."
"Elliptic Labs is driving innovation with their AI virtual sensor platform, and this collaboration highlights the benefits and potential of our Tensilica HiFi DSPs," explains Yipeng Liu, product marketing group director for Tensilica audio/voice IP at Cadence. "Together with Elliptic Labs, we can bring transformative user experiences like presence detection and touchless user interfaces to next-generation devices."
Founded in 2006 as a research spin-off from Norway’s Oslo University, Elliptic Labs is headquartered in Norway and continues to expand its presence in the USA, China, South-Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. The company has found a very receptive market for its technology in smartphones and laptop applications and is working on expanding it in the consumer electronics, industrial and automotive markets. Elliptic Labs is the only software company in the market that has delivered detection capabilities using AI software, ultrasound and sensor-fusion deployed at scale.
Its patented technology is now increasingly found in many of the large volume Chinese smartphone brands, which desperately seek to introduce differentiating features to its designs. Having a proximity software sensor changes smartphone design, by eliminating the need for additional hardware sensors, while gesture detection allows interesting experiments in growing categories like mobile gaming.
For professionals, Elliptic Labs' AI Virtual Presence Sensor adds a layer of additional security to laptops and other IT devices. Elliptic Labs offers a software-only solution that automatically turns a laptop's screen on and off based on whether a user is present in front of it or not. The virtual sensor does this by utilizing the laptop’s existing speaker and microphone to transmit and receive ultrasound signals, then interprets those signals using AI and proprietary algorithms to detect when a user enters or leaves the area.
Elliptic Labs has established its technology as a critical capability of laptop/PC designs, developing significant relationships and compatibility with the major platforms to ensure long-term PC market relevancy. In 2020, the Norwegian company expanded its team in Taiwan to support major companies.
