British loudspeaker company Bowers & Wilkins, famed for bringing its knowledge and acoustic experience to the automotive industry, has extended its successful partnership with BMW, with the launch of the iX, the new luxury electric SAV from BMW. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is now fitted in the iX, delivering what the Brande defines as "the most advanced sound quality found in a car." The iX goes on sale in Spring 2022.

The new BMW iX is the symbol for a new era of mobility at BMW. The new model redefines the successful concept of the BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), and is the first in a future-oriented generation of modular automobiles, which are redefining the driving experience, the feeling of space, and the relationship between the car and its passengers. This all-electric SAV offers competitive range and a battery capacity of up to 113 kWh. Dual electric motors deliver power and efficiency – combined with the stability of electric all-wheel drive.

The design brief for Bowers & Wilkins was to deliver an audio experience that feels as though the driver and passengers are with the artist in the studio, a concept that Bowers & Wilkins refer to as ‘True Sound’. This can only be achieved through close collaboration between the engineering teams from both BMW and Bowers & Wilkins, and by using proven technologies from Bowers & Wilkins’ core range of passive loudspeakers.

The BMW iX is the first fully electric vehicle to feature the brand's Diamond Dome tweeters, as found in Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers. The exceptionally accurate, low-distortion tweeters feature Nautilus swirls - spiraling channels behind the tweeter domes that dissipate reflected sound waves that emanate from the rear of the driver unit and limit distortion. In keeping with the minimalist interior of the BMW iX, the tweeters are covered with brushed stainless-steel covers with a laser-etched logo and a discreet lighting effect, and the door speakers are discretely hidden behind acoustically optimized fabric.

In total, there are two Diamond Dome tweeters, three Aluminum Dome tweeters and five Aramid Fibre midrange speakers mounted as high as possible within the light, spacious cabin. A further eight speakers are integrated into the front and rear headrests, which can be individually adjusted to create a truly personalised audio experience for each passenger.

For the first time, four bass speakers are joined by 4D Shakers that are strategically positioned within the interior to produce a rich bass experience even at low volumes. Passengers can engage with the sound system through four different sound modes, according to preference. The resulting sound is detailed and free from coloration, seamlessly integrated within the car design.

Harman Integration
General audio system design for the new BMW iX was provided by Harman Automotive. BMW iX customers can upgrade from the standard non-branded audio system to either the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System or the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound audio system for an elevated listening experience.

With a total of 30 speakers – eight speakers integrated into the headrests of the first and second row of seats – and an amplifier power of 1,615 watts, the innovative Bowers & Wilkins system produces an exceptional audio experience incorporating proven technologies from their passive loudspeakers ranges. A model-specific Harman Kardon Surround Sound System is available as an option, featuring 18 speakers and an amplifier output of 655 watts.
