Audio Precision announced the release of APx500 software version 9.0.1 Beta, now supporting ARM CPU architecture, commonly found in mobile and Apple silicon devices. With a minor increment in numbering, this software version is actually a very big development, allowing users to run APx500 directly on ARM-based Windows PCs, including the latest Microsoft Surface devices, and on Mac computers via virtual machine software such as Parallels Desktop.
In the interest of getting this functionality to the growing number of Mac and ARM platform users as early as possible, Audio Precision decided to offer the 9.0.1 software as a feature-complete Beta to alo gather feedback from users before final validation. The update is available as a download from the Audio Precision website for users holding licenses valid for APx500 v9.0.
ARM-based computing platforms in multiple forms have progressed tremendously compared to x86-based systems. ARM-based processors made substantial inroads into the PC market and are projected to nearly double their market share from 14% to 25% by 20273, according to Counterpoint Research. Arm Holdings' CEO, Rene Haas told Reuters that ARM-based processors could capture over 50% of the Windows PC market before 2028. And this is because ARM chips offer much low power consumption, its performance already challenges x86 processors in various applications, and more importantly, ARM's licensing model allows companies like Apple and Qualcomm to design custom chips tailored to specific needs.
Apple's transition to ARM-based M-series chips has been highly successful, while Windows on ARM has seen significant improvements as the availability of native ARM-based applications is increasing.
This Audio Precision release is part of the company’s effort in enabling broader access to high-performance audio analysis tools and fits into its legacy of empowering engineers in bringing to life the next wave of audio product technology. For those without a license, Audio Precision continues to offer a free 30-day trial of this and other recent APx500 releases. Sign up here.
