NPR and Edison Research released its annual Smart Audio Report, showcasing voice technology trends in the US. The 2022 Report highlights the increased usage of voice technology, with 35% of Americans 18+ now owning a smart speaker. In 2022, 62% of Americans 18+ use a voice assistant on any device – smart speakers, smartphones, TV remotes, in-car systems, a computer/laptop, and tablets. While suggesting growth, the report also shows adoption and usage is stalling.

Chinese smart home players are poised to parlay strength in smart home voice control into global influence. According to ABI Research, China will surpass the United States in voice control front end shipments by 15 million units at the end of 2020. Overall, the Asia-Pacific smart home installed base will grow from 66 million in 2020 to 316 million (a 30% CAGR) between 2020 and 2026, states the global tech market advisory firm. In the same period, the smart home installed base in the United States will grow a mere 3.6%.

The value chain for voice assistants and interfaces is rapidly expanding to include more and more players, and device OEMs (from smartphones, speakers and wearables to cars and fridges), system integrators, apps developers and cloud providers are all escalating efforts to provide personalized voice solutions.
