FlexTech and PARC Cooperate on Ultra-Thin, Flexible Audio Speaker Development

FlexTech, a SEMI Strategic Association Partner announced a new development project with PARC, a Xerox company, to develop a hybrid, highly bendable, paper-like smart tag, incorporating a thin audio speaker. The product, based on the most advanced printed electronics uses active and passive components, and is aimed at applications in packaging, wearables prosthetics, soft robotics, smart tags, and smart cities and homes.

Research from Fraunhofer IDMT Finds Use of Soundbars Actually Improves TV Viewing Experience

The German Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, in Oldenburg, Germany, has compared the speech intelligibility and sound quality of a Samsung smart TV and a Samsung soundbar. The results show that using the soundbar considerably reduces listening effort in comparison to using only the TV set. 15 adults aged between 25 and 55 were invited to the Fraunhofer IDMT’s Sound Technologies Lab (STL) in Oldenburg for the study.

Audio Recordings Perpetually Stored on DNA For the First Time

Twist Bioscience, a company dedicated to DNA synthesis, working with Microsoft and University of Washington researchers, announced that they have successfully stored archival-quality audio recordings of two important music performances from the archives of the world-renowned Montreux Jazz Festival. Recordings were encoded and stored in DNA, for the first time. This is the first time DNA has been used as a long-term archival-quality storage medium. The tiny specks of DNA will preserve a part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Archive, where valuable cultural heritage collections are recorded.

Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, announced a breakthrough in speech separation technology at an annual R&D open house held in Tokyo. The research lab has created the world's first technology that separates in real time the simultaneous speech of multiple unknown speakers recorded with a single microphone. It’s a key step towards building machines that can interact in noisy environments, in the same way that humans can have meaningful conversations in the presence of many other conversations.

3D Sound Labs, the 3D/VR Audio specialist, announced a collaboration with Microsoft to work on research about spatial audio systems and develop new uses for 3D Audio. After benchmarking the offerings available today on the market, Microsoft selected 3D Sound Labs based on the performance of its 3D audio head tracking module. 3D Sound Labs' solution brings accuracy, a high sampling rate and very low latency, which are important characteristics of a high-quality 3D Audio rendering.

Listeners Are Effectively Able to Find Audible Differences with High-Resolution Audio

A new study by Dr. Joshua Reiss of the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), published in the June issue of the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (JAES), concludes that in the majority of cases listeners can hear a difference between standard audio and better-than-CD quality, known as high-resolution audio (HRA). The study, involving over 12,000 different trials, is the first to apply formal meta-analysis techniques to audio engineering research.
